(01/191) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2020 that, 5 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Hakurk area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on July 29, 2019.

(01/192) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2020 that, a person named Resul Eken was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police during a house raid in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on January 21, 2020. It is reported that Resul Eken’s nose was broken due to police violence. It is stated in the news reports that Resul Eken was detained with his sister Besra Eken, and a report evidencing the violence was not given to him at hospital. It is learned that Besra Eken was released on the same day while Resul Eken is still under custody.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2020 that, Alican Aygün, a reader of Kaldıraç journal, was threatened by the police stopping him on January 20, 2020 in front of his home and saying “you have children, you should put yourself together”.

(01/194) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1170 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 22, 2020 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 22, 2020, 2 people (Merve Demirel and Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 2 people (Merve Demirel and Mehmet Dersulu) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on January 22, 2020. It is learned detained people were released on the same days they were detained.

(01/195) Detained People in Ankara for Holding a Protest in Subway…

4 people (Y. A., B. Ç., M. Ç. and A. G.) are detained in Ankara on January 22, 2020, on the grounds that they made speeches in a subway train to protest dismissals by state of emergency decrees and Air Force Academy students on trial.

It is learned that a warrant is issued for 12 people in Izmir and operations are initiated on January 22, 2020.

(01/197) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case known as “VIP Illegal Tapping Case” against 211 people including Ramazan Akyürek, former chair of Intelligence Department of General Directorate of Security; and Gürsel Aktepe, former deputy chair of the department, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 2020. The court sentenced 126 people to jail sentence from 3 years 9 months to 10 years 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’; 105 people to jail sentence from 4 years 6 months to 10 years 6 months for ‘counterfeiting official documents’; and 92 people to jail sentence from 3 years to 7 years 6 months for ‘illegal tapping and recording’. The court sentenced 5 people to jail sentence from 2 years 9 months to 9 years for ‘illegal tapping and recording’, ‘counterfeiting official documents’, and ‘qualified theft by deception’. The court acquitted 37 people and separated the case against 43 people.

(01/198) Ban of Events in Van…

Van Governorate made a declaration on January 22, 2020 and announced that, all open and indoor events such as demonstrations, press declarations, meetings, sit-ins, opening stands and tents, festivals, concerts, delivering leaflets and so on are banned for 15 days as of January 24, 2020. All events are banned in Van for 1174 days since November 21, 2016.
