(12/218) TMA Chair and HRFT Board Member Arrested…

The first trial of the case against Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) chair and the HRFT executive board member, on the grounds of her statements to a news channel, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 24 on December 23, 2022. It is learned that the court board limited the numbers of lawyers at the trial to three and rejected the demand for moving the trial to a greater room. Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı stated that the request for being transferred by plane was rejected and that she was brought by a bus with handcuffs. The court rejected the intervention demand of the Ministry of National Defence. The prosecutor declared legal opinion and demanded sentence for Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation via press’ and demanded continuation of detention. The court decided to continue detention and adjourned the trial to December 29, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2022 that, 1 militant died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units on June 1, 2022 and 3 militants died in a clash on July 4, 2022 in Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

It is learned that a soldier named Ümit Buharlı, who was on duty in Çukurca district of Hakkari died on December 23, 2022. It is claimed in the news reports that Ümit Buharlı killed himself.

(12/221) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on December 22, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(12/222) Detained DBP Co-Chair and Other People…

On December 23, 2022, 14 people including the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-chair are detained in house raids in 9 cities through a Diyarbakır based investigation.

The names of detained people learned so far are: DBP co-chair Keskin Bayındır, Diyarbakır provincial co-chairs Hayrettin Altun and Seval Gülmez, Batman provincial co-chairs Ruken Onat and Burhan Eğlenti, Şırnak provincial co-chair Zeki İrmez, provincial co-chairs Şengül Polat and Harun Okay, Urfa provincial co-chairs Rabia Aslan and Hidayet Enmek, provincial co-chairs Ethem Önal and Zeliha Aslan, Mardin provincial co-chairs Şerafettin Aslan and Süreyya Dündar, Ağrı provincial co-chair Melik Özmüş.

(12/223) Detained HDP Members and Executives in Istanbul…

On December 23, 2022, 6 members and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) are detained in house raids in Istanbul. The reason for detention is unknown.

Detained people are: HDP Sancaktepe district executive Kerim Kılıç, Ahmet Özbey, Melek Akdoğan, Şükran Altunkaynak, Devran Kaya, Muhittin Güler.

Bitlis Journalists’ Association chair Sinan Aygül, who was arrested over a news report on December 14, 2022 is released from prison on December 22, 2022.

(12/225) Detained Person in Tunceli for Social Media Posts…

One person named Gökhan Karakuş who was detained in Pertek district of Tunceli on December 21, 2022 on the grounds of making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media, is arrested by the court on December 23, 2022.

(12/226) Detained HDP Members in Muş…

It is learned that 4 members of HDP Youth Assembly (Yılmaz Tankan, Faruk Küçükçelebi, Mücahit Kılıç, Celal Döner) are detained in house raids in Muş on December 23, 2022. The reason for detention is unknown.

(12/227) Detained People in Van…

It is learned that 3 people (Yusuf Karadağ, Burkan Erdemir, Azize Onat) are detained in house raids in Van on December 23, 2022. The reason for detention is unknown.

(12/228) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Dicle News Agency reporter Ramazan Akoğul, which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on December 22, 2022 as the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice has overturned the local court’s verdict. The court adjourned the trial to February 2, 2023.

(12/229) Newspaper Distributors on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against Mikail Tunçdemir and Ferhat Duman who were detained while distributing Özgürlükçü Demokrasi and Azadiya Welat newspapers is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on December 22, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to February 21, 2023.

(12/230) People on Trial in Istanbul for Participating in Protest…

The trial of the case against 97 people who were detained by the police intervening into the protest against the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, on February 1, 2021, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 32 on December 21, 2022. The court ruled to issue warrant for 4 defendants who did not attend the trial and adjourned the trial to May 25, 2023.

(12/231) People on Trial in Istanbul for Participating in the Pride March…

The trial of the case against 19 people who were detained by the police intervening in the Pride March in Istanbul in 2021, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 60 on December 23, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to January 27, 2023.

HDP Diyarbakır MP Semra Güzel was stripped of her MP status in the voting made in the general assembly of the parliament on December 22, 2022.

(12/233) Journalist on House Confinement…

It is learned that the house confinement condition for journalist Zemo Ağgöz who was detained in Ankara on October 25, 2022, is lifted upon her lawyers’ objection with a ban on leaving the country on December 22, 2022.

(12/234) Police Raid to DBP Offices in Ağrı, Ankara, Antep, Batman, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Urfa, Şırnak, Van…

It is learned that the headquarters of DBP in Ankara, provincial offices in Ağrı, Antep, Batman, Mardin, Urfa, Şırnak and Van, and the information office in Diyarbakır were raided and searched by the police on December 22, 2022 through a Diyarbakır based investigation.
