(12/209) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced that 12 soldiers were killed in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants during the ” Pençe-Kilit” operation in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKBY) on December 22 and 23, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2023, that 2 soldiers were wounded due to a military vehicle crash in the rural areas of Şenköy neighborhood in the Midyat district of Mardin.

(12/210) Former Police Officer Subjected to Physical Violence by a Police Officer…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2023, that former police officer B.Ö. was subjected to physical violence by Avcılar District Security Director M.Ö. after a quarrel between the two, and Istanbul Security Directorate initiated judicial and administrative proceedings. Istanbul Governorate announced that M.Ö. was dismissed from duty: “The images of Avcılar Police Chief M.Ö. reflected in the media have caused deep regret. Due to this incident, which cannot be accepted regardless of the reason, M. Ö. has been dismissed from his position as Avcılar Police Chief. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and an inspector has been requested to investigate the incident”.

(12/211) Person Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment by the Police in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 202,3, that a person named Aydın Demir was subjected to physical and verbal violence by police officers in the Yeldeğirmeni neighborhood of the Kadıköy district of Istanbul for asking the reason for an identity check. Aydın Demir, who was forced into a police car with the use of physical violence, shared the following: “After I was forced into the car, the police officer sitting on the right seat tried to punch me several times and I tried to protect myself by holding my face in the car. Other police officers swore and insulted me and the lawyer who I saw recording the incident. He swore at me saying ‘F***ing Kadıköy residents think they are something.’ (…) I was kept at the police station for 2 hours. I did not sign the documents they wanted me to sign.”

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2023, that Ali Kılıç, deputy chair of the Sultangazi Republican People’s Party (CHP) Youth Branch, was attacked by an anonymous person or persons and was taken into surgery, and his condition is not life-threatening.

It is learned that the appeal made on December 22, 2023, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

On December 22, 2023, the police prevented the press statement organized by Eğitim Sen, Eğitim İş, and CHP in front of the Bursa Provincial Directorate of National Education to protest ‘I am sensitive to the environment, I claim my values’ (ÇEDES) project and the Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin.

(12/215) Commemoration Prevented by the Police and Soldiers in Muş…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2023, that the police and soldiers prevented the commemoration from being held at the grave of Kurdish singer Mîr Perwer, who died in an armed attack in France on December 23, 2022, on the anniversary of his death in the Yeşilova town of Muş, on the grounds of the governorate’s ban, and barricaded the road; and that those who wanted to attend the commemoration were prevented from doing so. It is learned that executives and members of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), DEM Parti Youth Assembly, and Free Women’s Movement (TJA) were prevented from entering the town.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 25, 2023, that following the Democratic University Watch at Boğaziçi University, some students were not allowed into the university campus without any justification.

It is learned that 59 people, including 3 children, were detained with the use of physical violence after the DEM Parti 1st Youth Assembly Congress in Diyarbakır on December 24, 2023, and the Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation on the congress.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2023, that singer Ufuk Yıkılmaz, known as Şehinşah, who was detained on December 22, 2023, on the grounds of insulting the President in a song, was released on December 23, 2023.

3 people (Zeki Tosun, Nazmi Tosun and Abdullah Encü) who were detained on December 22, 2023 in Ortasu (Roboski) village of Uludere district of Şırnak were released the same day after statement procedures at the gendarmerie.

On December 22, 2023, a person named Nusrettin Kaya was detained in house raids in the İdil district of Şırnak.

On December 24, 2023, a person named O.K. was detained in Antalya for insulting the state, Atatürk and soldiers in his social media posts.

(12/222) CHP Chair on Trial…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2023, that Ankara Regional Court of Appeals Civil Chamber No 25 upheld the non-pecuniary damage fine of 50.000 Turkish Liras given to CHP chair Özgür Özel for violating the personal rights of the President in a speech he made on December 17, 2020.

(12/223) Political Party Executives, Members, and a Journalist on Trial…

It is learned that Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against the executives and members of SOL Party, who were detained on March 1, 2023, on the grounds of a ban by the district governor’s office, and Birgün reporter Asena Tunca, who was detained while she was following news reports, and the indictment was accepted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on December 22, 2023. The indictment demands a jail sentence from 6 months to 3 years for 77 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The first hearing of the case will be held on April 19, 2024.

(12/224) Magazine Staff on Trial in Tekirdağ…

On December 22, 2023, Tekirdağ Heavy Penal Court No 2 held the final trial of the case against Ramazan Dişarı, who was detained and arrested while selling Demokratik Modernite magazine at the provincial congress of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Tekirdağ on September 25, 2022. The court acquitted Dişarı. Ramazan Dişarı was released during the hearing of the case held on March 7, 2023.

(12/225) Journalists and Others on Trial in Bursa…

The final trial of the case against 16 people, including journalists Ozan Kaplanoğlu, Hatice Nur Derya, and Burhan Gökay Küpeli, who were detained in the police intervention against the press statement in Bursa on February 27, 2021, to protest the rector appointed by the President to Boğaziçi University, was held at Bursa Penal Court of First Instance No 8 on December 22, 2023. The court acquitted all defendants.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 22, 2023 that Selçuk Bayraktar, son-in-law of the President, filed a lawsuit against Birgün Newspaper and journalist İsmail Arı, on the grounds of defamation and violation of personal rights in the news article published in Birgün Newspaper on September 17, 2023, with the title “Whatever the partisans want, they give”.

(12/227) People on Trial in Ankara…

The first hearing of the case against 10 people for the speeches made during the traditional Cow Feast held at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences in 2022 was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 68 on December 21, 2023. The indictment demands a sentence for 10 people on the charges of ‘publicly denigrating religious values embraced by a section of the public’ and ‘insulting the President.’ The court adjourned the hearing to May 14, 2024.

The trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, spokesperson of Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA), continued on December 22, 2023 at Nusaybin Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The court adjourned the trial to March 29, 2024.

(12/229) Social Media Posts Under Investigation…

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that an investigation has been initiated against some posts under a title opened in Ekşi Sözlük on December 23, 2023, about the soldiers who died during the Pençe-Kilit operations, on the grounds that they constitute the crimes of ‘openly inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘humiliating the Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the institutions and organs of the state’.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 25, 2023, that anonymous people went to the HDP Bursa Provincial Office on December 24, 2023, and wrote, “We came, you were not here” at the entrance of the office.

(12/231) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned that https://eksisozluk1999.com, the website of Ekşi Sözlük, was banned from access by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority and Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 7 on December 24, 2023.

It is learned that 117 news reports and posts about Mustafa Doğan İnal, former lawyer of the President, on 23 different news websites were banned from access by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 3 on December 22, 2023.
