(01/211) Male Violence Monitoring Report for 2020…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet which was published on January 21, 2021, at least 284 women and 26 children were killed by men in 2020. It is also reported that 96 women were raped, 818 women were forced to sex work, 792 women were subjected to violence, 265 children were abused and 147 women were sexually harassed/abused by men in 2020.

It is learned that 1 soldier (Selim Gedik) who got wounded due to mine explosion in Hakkari, died in hospital on January 24, 2021.

(01/213) Person Injured by Military Vehicle Hit in Diyarbakır…

It is learned that a 70-year-old person (Şükrü Günay) injured after being hit by an armoured military vehicle in Dere rural neighbourhood of Eğil district of Diyarbakır on January 22, 2021. It is learned that the person was first taken to Eğil Public Hospital and then was admitted to Gazi Yaşargil Research and Training Hospital.

(01/214) Prisoner Died in Edirne…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2021 that, Hadi Yalçın, who was kept in Edirne F Type Prison and was released from prison on January 4, 2021 because of suffering from gastric cancer, lost his life in Trakya University Medicine Faculty Hospital on January 8, 2021.

(01/215) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2021 that, Mehmet Sıraç, a prisoner kept in Aksaray T Type Prison was not released from prison although he completed his sentence; because of disciplinary penalties given to him. It is also stated in the news reports that, Mehmet Sıraç was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers and he was injured at his face and body. Mehmet Sıraç stated the following in the phone conversation with his family: “They keep penalising me with solitary cell confinement. They did not allow me to use phone call right last week. And they did not allow me to visit the prison infirmary either. I cut my hand with razor, as a reaction to that. Then they took me to the infirmary and the chief correction officer beat me there, right in front of the doctor. My nose is broken, there is a swelling in my right eye and I still have the marks of physical violence on my body. I got psychologically unwell. They are not taking me to a hospital to get a medical report evidencing the violence. And this was not the first time they beat me.”

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2021 that, the letter of Şiyar Yıldırım, a prisoner in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 5, addressing Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP and member of Human Rights Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly to give information about the right violations in prison, was seized by prison administration on the grounds that it would “give incorrect information about prison to the persons related to illegal organisation”. It is also learned that a disciplinary proceeding was initiated against Şiyar Yıldırım for this letter. It is also stated in the news reports that the Kurdish letter from Şiyar Yıldırım’s wife was not given to him, and he was said “We do not have a translator. If you pay the translation fee, we will give it to you after translating and checking its content”.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 24, 2021 that, in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 5, social, cultural and sports rights of prisoners were restricted on the grounds of Covid-19 pandemic.

(01/216) Police Prevention to Protest About Hunger Strikes in Prison…

The police prevented the press declaration of HDP in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 22, 2021; which was held to draw attention to indefinite hunger strikes that started on November 27, 2020 in prisons to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. Parliamentary members of HDP held a declaration in front of Cizre Sub-Governorate, and it is learned that the police prevented journalists from recording the declaration and did not allow anybody else to participate in the declaration.

(01/217) Police Interventions to Protests About Abduction of Gökhan Güneş…

The police intervened the press declaration at Galatasaray Square of Istanbul on January 22, 2021 and detained 4 people. The declaration was about Gökhan Güneş, who was abducted by 5 people forcing him into a car in front of his workplace in Başakşehir district of Istanbul on January 20, 2021. Detained people (Socialist Party of the Oppressed [ESP] provincial executive Çınar Altan, Melek Bulut, Ferhat Harun and Zübeyde Güneş) are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

The police detained 2 people (Hıdır Yılmaz and Ömer Akgün) who was supporting Gökhan Güneş’s family, waiting outside of Istanbul Security Directorate on January 22, 2021.

The police intervened the press declaration in front of Şehit Zeki Kaya police station in Ikitelli on January 23, 2021 and detained 12 people. Detained people (Nurhayat Güneş, Gülhayat Güneş, Sine Güneş, Zübeyde Güneş, Nazlıca Güneş, HDP Party Assembly member Helin Yılmaz, Ezgi Gökçay, Ferhat Harun Pehlivan, Bedran Çoğaltay, Tanya Kara, Ela Deniz Albayrak, Özge Doğan) are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration in front of Arena Park in Başakşehir district of Istanbul on January 24, 2021 and detained 5 people. Detained people are: Gülhayat Toraman, Nurhayat Güneş, Ferhat Harun Pehlivan, Özge Doğan, Hacı Toraman.

(01/218) Police Prevention to Lawyers’ Protest in Ankara…

The police prevented the press declaration in front of Ankara Courthouse on January 22, 2021, organized by Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), Progressive Layers Association (ÇHD) and Lawyers for Social Law and Democracy Group members, for the Day of the Endangered Lawyer. The ground for prevention was Covid-19 pandemic.

(01/219) Police Raid to HDP District Office in Istanbul and Detained HDP Executives…

On January 24, 2021, the police raided HDP office in Esenyurt district of Istanbul. It is learned that the reason of the raid was a portrait of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, which was covered by a photograph taken during disinfection in the office provided by Esenyurt Municipality and which was then shared on social media by municipality. It is learned that the police seized documents, papers, books, banners and flags after the search and detained district co-chairs Dilan Kılıç and Ercan Sağlam. Detained district co-chairs are released after statement procedures on the same day.

On January 22, 2021, 1 person (Perihan Karaman) is detained in a house raid in Van. The reason of detention is unknown.

(01/221) Detained People in Istanbul…

2 people (A. G. and G. A.) who was detained in Istanbul through an Adana based investigation on January 21, 2021, are arrested by the court in Adana on January 23, 2021, on the charge of being an illegal organisation member.

(01/222) Detained People in Antalya for Social Media Posts…

3 of 4 people (Abdulhakim Aktaş, Hasan Perioğlu and Cemal Dalgıç) who were detained for social media posts in Alanya district of Antalya are released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 22, 2021. It is learned that 1 person (Zelal Dalgıç) is still under custody.

(01/223) Detained Person in Istanbul for Social Media Posts…

It is learned that 1 person (E. E.) who was detained on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in social media posts in Istanbul, is arrested by the court on January 22, 2021. E. E. was detained on January 21, 2021, on the grounds of insulting the mother of Minister of Interior, and was released by the court on judicial control conditions. Following the post shared by the Minister after he was released, E. E. was detained once again upon further examinations.

(01/224) TJA Activist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Fatma Gül, an activist of Free Women’s Movement (TJA), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on January 22, 2021. The court sentenced Fatma Gül to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against Mahmut Demir, through an investigation against Democratic Society Congress (DTK), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 22, 2021. The court sentenced Mahmut Demir to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

On January 22, 2021, Istanbul Regional Court Penal Department No 3, reversed the acquittal of 9 people (Osman Kavala, Mücella Yapıcı, Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman, Ali Hakan Altınay, Yiğit Aksakoğlu, Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi, Çiğdem Mater Utku and Mine Özerden) by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 30 in the case about Gezi Park protests in Istanbul in 2013.

It is learned that the news reports on fraudulent meat trade published on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr/, https://t24.com.tr/ websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights, by Bursa Penal Court of Peace No 6 on January 21, 2021.

(01/228) Dismissal of Judges and Prosecutors…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2021 that, 9 judges and prosecutors are dismissed and 4 judges are suspended from their duties by the Council of Judges and Prosecutors, on the grounds of “Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation / Parallel State Structure Investigations”.

(01/229) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 22, 2021, 32 people are detained in operations covering 23 cities through an Ankara based investigation on leakage of Judge and Prosecutor Exam in 2011.

86 of 200 people who were detained on January 19, 2021 through an Izmir based investigation are arrested by the court on January 22 and 23, 2021. 52 people are released on judicial control conditions. It is learned that 2 people are still under custody. Thus, the number of arrested people through this investigation is 111 while 87 people are released provided that 69 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

2 judges who were dismissed from their duties by the Council of Judges and Prosecutors are detained and 1 of them is arrested by the court on January 24, 2021. 1 person is released on judicial control conditions.

(01/230) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 149 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 736 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 22, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 5,967.

The Ministry of Health declared that 144 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 723 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 23, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 5,856.

The Ministry of Health declared that 140 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 684 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 24, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 5,277.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 25,073 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,429,605 as of January 24, 2021.
