It is learned that Taner Işıldak (46) is found hanged in his ward in Bilecik M Type Prison on February 23, 2022. It is reported that Bilecik Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation for suspicious death of Taner Işıldak who is claimed to kill himself.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 23, 2022 that, Ferhat Sayıner, a prisoner who was transferred from Van High Security Prison to Antalya S Type Prison under coercion was not allowed to take his personal belongings.
It is learned from the news coverage of February 23, 2022 that, Nudem Durak, who was transferred to Bayburt M Type Prison under coercion, demanded to be transferred to another prison and was refused. It is also stated in the news reports that, the guitar sent by English musician Roger Waters to Nudem Durak as her guitar was broken by the correction officers, was not allowed in the prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 22, 2022 that, prisoners in Mardin E Type Prison went on a hunger strike in groups of 3, to demand an end to right violations in prison.
It is learned from the news coverage of February 23, 2022 that, Emir Karakum, a prisoner in Samsun Bafra T Type Prison went on a one-month hunger strike on February 16, 2022 to support other prisoners Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım who are on hunger strike.

It is learned that the appeal made on February 22, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned that a racist group attacked on Kurdish students in Akdeniz University in Antalya on February 22, 2022 and 3 people (Hatice Tonğ, Botan Artuç and Feyzi Akan) are injured in the attack.

It is learned that a 17-year-old child (C. A.) who was detained while distributing leaflets for 8 March in Izmir on February 21, 2022, was subjected to strip search and psychological violence under custody. C. A. is released on February 23, 2022.
The child stated the following to the press: “I was taken to the juvenile department 3 days ago and I was subjected to psychological violence there (…) I was subjected to strip search, they forced me to have a bath.”

The police intervened the press declarations of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 22 and 23, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

The police intervened the protest of Gülistan Doku’s mother, father and sister outside the Ministry of Justice building, as their appointment request was rejected on February 23, 2022, nobody was detained in the intervention. Gülistan Doku has gone missing in Tunceli on January 5, 2022 and no news was received from her since then.
As the protest of the family continued to demand to meet the Minister of Justice, the police intervened once again and detained 3 people.
Detained 3 people were released on the same day and the police intervened them once again as they were on their way to the Ministry of Justice building to continue the protest, and did not allow them. It is learned that nobody was detained.

It is learned that 1 person (Nergis Doğru) is detained by the police after the press declaration about ill prisoners in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on February 23, 2022.

Mesut Hayri Bökü and Naile Gümüştaş, Turgutlu district co-chairs of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who were detained on February 14, 2022 in Manisa, are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on February 22, 2022.

11 people including Esin Çelik, co-chair of the Marmara Solidarity Association for Prisoners’ Families (MATUHAY-DER) and HDP members were detained in house raids in Istanbul on February 15, 2022. 1 person (Süleyman Erzengin) is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on February 22, 2022 while 10 people are released on judicial control conditions.

The trial of the case against 27 people including HDP Mardin MP Pero Dündar is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on February 22, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to June 2, 2022.

The retrial of the case against Sebahat Tuncel, former co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), on the charge of insulting the President is held on February 22, 2022. The court acquitted Sebahat Tuncel. Diyarbakır Regional Court has reversed the 11 months and 20 days of sentence given by Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 10.

The trial of the case against Rosa Women’s Association member Fatma Gültekin is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on February 23, 2022.
The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Fatma Gültekin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to May 13, 2022.

The trial of the case against 46 journalists, known as “KCK Press Case” is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 3 on February 22, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to June 9, 2022.

It is learned that the indictment against PEN International Writers’ Association member Gökhan Yavuzel, on the grounds of insulting the President on his social media post about Deniz Poyraz who was killed in an armed attack on HDP’s Izmir office, is accepted by Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 4 on February 23, 2022. It is learned that the first trial will be held on May 10, 2022.

The final trial of the case against Serdar Karakurt is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 23 on February 23, 2022. The court sentenced the defendant to 24 years and 9 months on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘forgery of official documents’.

The Ministry of Health declared that 271 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 86,070 as of February 22, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 93,258 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 13,762,181 as of February 23, 2022.
