(11/265) Person Died Due to Gunfire Opened from an Armoured Police Vehicle in Urfa…

On November 21, 2018, Sedat Polat (32), a passenger of the bus which was stopped at a police checkpoint in Birecik district of Urfa, died due to the gunfire opened from an armoured police vehicle known as “Scorpion”, located at the checkpoint during ID record checks. Urfa Governorate announced that an investigation on the issue is initiated.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 21, 2018 that Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair and People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Hakkari MP Leyla Güven, who went on a hunger strike to protest isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, is subjected to a disciplinary proceeding and penalised to ‘deprivation of paid work for 1 month’.

(11/267) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 743 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on November 21, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on November 21, 2018, 3 people (Mahmut Konuk, Acun Karadağ and Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 2 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt and İlker Işık) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on November 21, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(11/268) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on November 21, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 49th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

The police intervened into the press declaration of unions and professional organisations to be held for World Television Day, outside of Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) institution in Ankara and detained Media Communication and Postal Employees Union (Haber-Sen) general secretary Burak Ustaoğlu.

2 people (Hasan Kabak and Abdülkadir Çalağan) are detained for social media posts, in house raids in Viranşehir district of Urfa on November 21, 2018.

(11/271) Woman is Detained with Her Baby in Adana…

Huri Haksever, who was detained with her 6 months old baby, in a house raid in Adana on November 20, 2018 and who was then taken to Diyarbakır for investigation, is released on judicial control conditions by the court on November 21, 2018.

(11/272) People Detained in the Police Raid to Henna Night in Urfa…

4 people (Ramazan Süer, Rozerin Süer, Fikriye Süer and Yaze Süer) who were detained on the grounds of having people dance with yellow-red-green pennants at the henna night (bridal party) which was raided by the police in Viranşehir district of Urfa on November 20, 2018 are released by the prosecutor’s instruction after statement procedures at the police on November 21, 2018.

(11/273) HDP MP on Trial…

The case against HDP’s Diyarbakır MP Selçuk Mızraklı, for his activities within Democratic Society Congress (DTK) is held on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on November 21, 2018. Lawyers demanded legal proceedings against Mızraklı to be ended because of being elected as a parliament member however the court rejected this demand on the grounds of Article 83 and 14 of the Constitution which covers exceptions of legislative impunity. The court adjourned the trial.

(11/274) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against İsmail Çoban, former editor in chief of Azadiya Welat, the Kurdish newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 on November 21, 2018. The court sentenced İsmail Çoban to 5 years for ‘successively making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(11/275) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The case against Evrensel newspaper’s writer Yusuf Karataş, for his activities within Democratic Society Congress (DTK) is held on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on November 21, 2018. The court lifted judicial control conditions for Yusuf Karataş and rejected to lift travel ban and adjourned the trial.

(11/276) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On November 21, 2018, 7 people are arrested in operations covering 9 cities through a Kırıkkale based investigation; 15 people are detained in operations covering 14 cities through a Samsun based investigation; 8 people are detained in operations covering 4 cities through an Erzurum based investigation; and 11 people are detained in Kayseri.

3 of 4 people who were detained in an alleged attempt to illegally cross to Greece are arrested by the court on November 21, 2018. 1 person is released on judicial control conditions.
