(03/214) Ozgur Gundem Case…
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 continued on 21 March 2017 hearing the case against Prof. Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci (HRFT President), Erol Ondroglu (Reporters Without Borders Turkey Representative) and Ahmet Nesin (Journalist and Writter). The indictment wants the defendant to be sentenced for ‘provoking commission of an offence’, ‘praising the offence and offender’ and ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization.’
The hearing was observed by representatives of several human rights organizations throughout the world, including Prof. Dr. Christian Pross, the international observer on behalf of the German Medical Association; Angelika Claussen, Reginol Vice President of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War-Europe; Safya Akorri from International Federation for Human Rights; Britta Jenkins, former staff of the Berlin Hinrichsen from Jiyan Foundation in the Kurdistan Regional Government; Barbara Neppert from Amnesty International Germeny; Sara Kokemuller from Physşcşans Group of Amnesty International Germany and Alper Oktem from International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War-Germany.
In the hearing, the amıcus curiae prepared by Article 19, an internationally respected NGO defending freedom of expression and information worldwide, was presented to the court.
The court adjourned the hearing to 8 June 2017 for completion of missing documents.
Prof. Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci (HRFT President), Erol Ondroglu (Reporters Without Borders Turkey Representative) and Ahmet Nesin (Journalist and Writter) were arrested on 20 June 2016 for defending of freedom press and expression in solidarity with daily Ozgur Gundem and were released ten days after their arrest.
(03/215) Person Shot by the Police during Newroz Celebration in Diyarbakır…
The police shot a person on 21 March 2017, just before the Newroz Celebration in Diyarbakir on the ground that he was trying to enter the celebration area with a knife in his hand.
According to the press statement of Diyarbakir Governorate, the person who was shot was a suicide bomber. But according to photos appeared in the press, he was half naked.
(03/216) 3 Persons Killed By an Armored Vehicle…
An Ejder type armored vehicle hit another vehicle on 21 March 2017 on the 10th kilometer of Idil-Cizre road. Okan Ince, Bahadır Beyazogulları and another person whose name could not be reached were killed.
(03/217) 21 March Newroz Celebrations…
The police forces intervened the Newroz Celebrations in Yukseova with tear gas and plastic bullets. 3 persons were reportedly detained.
After the Newroz Celebration in Diyarbakır, the police forces attacked the persons who were leaving the celebration area with high pressured water. A person was reportedly injured and there were detentions.
In Siirt, persons under the age of 18 and persons without ID were not let in the celebration area. 2 women and a 13 years old child were detained because of the tension.
In Bingol, 7 persons were detained because of illegal slogans.
In Batman, 6 persons were detained for the colors yellow, red and green on their clothes.
In Izmir, 56 persons were detained for carrying flag with the colors yellow, red and green.
In Kiziltepe, Mardin, 1 person was detained after the celebration was over.
5 persons who were returning from Diyarbakır Newroz Celebration to Urfa were detained for carrying flags with the colors yellow, red and green. Names of the detainees are as follows: Yasin Mazlum Akhan, Zeki Colayır, Mehmet Yiğit, Abdullah Gül and Mehmet Aydın.
The Newroz Celebration in Tuzlucayir, Ankara, was prevented by the police forces on 21 Mach 2017.
(03/218) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
According to the news appeared on press, the women prisoners in Mardin E Type Prison started hunger strike on 15 March for 5 days period. The prisoners in the first group who are Bahar Bilge, Hafize Aymelek and Rezan Gözen were transferred to other prisons on 1 March 2017 against their will and demand.

Ali Gul was arrested on 21 March 2017 for ‘insulting the Head of State’ in “What is NO?” video he had prepared.
(03/220) Detentions and Arrests…
25 persons, including HDP and DBP members and executives, were detained on 21 March 2017 in Siirt’s Pervari district during house raids. The detainees were taken to the Gendarme District Headquarter.
11 persons, including IHD Vice Co-Chair of IHD and Chair of IHD Diyarbakir Branch Raci Bilici, who were detained on 15 March 2017 in Diyarbakir, were brought to court on 21 March 2017. 1 person named Esref Mamedoglu was arrested for ‘being a member of an illegal organization.’
(03/221) Detentions and Arrests in Connection with the Coup d’État Attempt…
Arrest warrants were issued on 21 March 2017 for 265 persons. 105 of them were reportedly detained.
Arrests warrants were issued on 21 March 2107 in an Aksaray centered police operation for 22 teachers, who were expelled before, for ‘using ByLock.’ 12 of them were reportedly detained.
9 employees of Under-Secretariat for the Treasury, who were expelled by a Decree with the Force of Law, were detained on 21 March 2017 for ‘using ByLock’
21 former police officials who were detained in a Mardin centered police operation were brought to court on 21 March 2017. 17 of them were arrested.
10 persons were detained on 21 March 2017 in Tekirdag during house raids.

An indictment was prepared by Bakirkoy Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning CHP Istanbul MP Eren Erdem for insulting a police director in a news appeared on the website whose chief editor is him. The indictment was accepted by Bakirkoy Penal Court of First Instance.
