It was learned from the news coverage of December 21, 2023, that students who decorated a New Year tree at Istanbul University were threatened by other students. The threatening message sent to the students included the following statements: “We have no problem with your lifestyles and you can breathe as you wish… Whether or not your program will be allowed by the rectorate is none of our business, but we say that we have heard that it will not be allowed, but this situation does not concern us. … This is Beyazıt and people like Yavuz are born from Beyazıt. It is not possible for us to allow that program to take place, no matter how many people and what qualifications you have. We advise you to keep in mind that numbers or power are not a criterion for us, and that our friends alone can prevent this program at any time of your life.”

On December 21, 2023, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti) Batman Kozluk District Co-Chair Ömer Emen, who was detained in a house raid through an Ankara-based investigation, was arrested by the court on the same day on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

The final hearing of the case against Suat Toktaş, former editor-in-chief of Halk TV, for his news reports on a former member of the Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK) and his son, who is a lawyer, was held on December 21, 2023, at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 39. The indictment demands a sentence for Suat Toktaş on the charge of ‘insulting a public official’. The court acquitted Suat Toktaş.

The final trial of the case against lawyer Aytaç Ünsal, who was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in the Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) case and is kept in Edirne F Type Prison, on the grounds of his statements about Deputy Minister of Justice in his letters, was held at Edirne Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on December 19, 2023. The court sentenced Aytaç Ünsal to 1 year and 3 months. The indictment demanded Aytaç Ünsal be sentenced for ‘insult’.
