(04/153) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned that on April 21, 2020, an armoured military vehicle on mine searching activity in rural areas of Çatak district of Van, went off the road because of loss of steering control and 6 soldiers got injured in accident.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that 2 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Şırnak on April 15, 2020.

(04/154) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that, Erdal Doğan, a prisoner kept in solitary cell in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison No 3 were subjected to physical violence of the wardens for he rejects to stand in military order during roll-calls. It is also stated in the news reports that wardens do not take precautions for Covid-19 and Erdal Doğan is not given cleaning supplies.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that in Şırnak T Type Prison precautions for Covid-19 are not taken and the food given to prisoners is insufficient.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that prisoners in Kırıkkale F Type Prison were not given disinfectant, cleaning supplies and face masks for protection from Covid-19. It is also stated in the news reports that some books, magazines and newspapers sent to prisoners were not given to them and distance learning programme is ended on January 24, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that wardens in Düzce T Type Prison were not wearing face masks and gloves despite of Covid-19 pandemic, and that prisoner were not given face masks and gloves.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2020 that, Sadık Sabancılar and Sinan Akbayır, 2 prisoners in Kırıkkale F Type Prison who were referred to hospital, were taken back from hospital without being treated because they reject to be examined in handcuffs. It is also stated in the news reports that referral of Sadık Sabancılar to hospital in March was cancelled on the grounds of Covid-19 pandemic.

(04/156) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1260 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 21, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(04/157) Detained HDP Members in Ağrı…

On April 21, 2020, 2 members of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who were disbursing food aid for those in need due to Covid-19 pandemic in Ağrı, are detained on the grounds of the ban of charity campaigns except that of Vefa Social Support Group formed by the government. Detained 2 people (HDP central district executive Hakan Mağlay and HDP member Yusuf Keser) are released on the same day. It is reported that the police seized 50 boxes of food aid.

(04/158) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against Selahattin Demirtaş, former co-chair of HDP; for his speeches at political party congresses, an interview of him published on a German daily, and several official complaints against him is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 18 on April 21, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Selahattin Demirtaş on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The first trial of the case will be held on July 14, 2020.

(04/159) Association Chair on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 5 people including Zeynep Yıldırım, Sarıyer branch chair of Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Center (PSAKD), is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35 on April 20, 2020.

After defence hearings the court released 5 people and adjourned the trial to July 8, 2020.

Zeynep Yıldırım was detained on July 24, 2018 and was arrested by the court on July 26, 2018.

(04/160) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 119 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 4,611 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 21, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 2,259 and total number of confirmed cases is 95,591 as of April 21, 2020.

Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office declared on April 21, 2020 that 64 prisoners in Buca Prison tested positive for Covid-19.

It is learned from data shared by Ankara Medical Chamber on April 21, 2020 that 169 health workers in Ankara tested positive for Covid-19.
