(01/207) Racist Attack in Bursa…

It is learned that 1 of 2 Syrian asylum seekers who were subjected to the attack of anonymous person in Osmangazi district of Bursa on January 22, 2022, died while the other one got wounded.

(01/208) Person Died in Prison…

On January 21, 2022, Ramazan Turan, a 70-year-old ill prisoner, died in the single quarantine cell where he was kept for the last 22 days in Van High Security Prison.

It is claimed in the news reports that Ramazan Turan died due to a heart attack. It is learned that his autopsy was conducted without presence of his family lawyers. It is reported that Van Metropolitan Municipality, which is governed by an appointed trustee did not provide a funeral vehicle and a coffin; it was not allowed to have his pre-funeral bath at Hakkari Public Hospital and the imam called for funeral did not come as the provincial muftiate did not order so.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2022 that, personal belongings of the prisoners in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were being scattered around during ward searches and the petitions of prisoners to the Ministry of Justice were not sent.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2022 that, newspapers, journals and so on were not given to prisoners in Edirne F Type Prison although there is no ban on these periodicals.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2022 that, Fatih Özgür Aydın, a prisoner kept in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison was not being referred to hospital as he rejects mouth search.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2022 that, 4 ill prisoners (Ferzende Erbi [72], Abdullah Ateş [70], Ehettin Kaynar [72] and Kerim Boran [81]) were not receiving medical treatment, their medications were not given to them regularly and they were taken to hospitals in unventilated and small cars.

It is learned that Gökhan Yıldırım, who went on a hunger strike on December 25, 2021 in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No 1 to demand an end to right violations, is on death fast as of January 22, 2022.

(01/212) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 21, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(01/213) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Kocaeli…

It is learned that a person (S. N.) who was detained after the meeting of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Gebze district of Kocaeli on January 9, 2022 was subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and under custody.

S. N. stated the following to the press: “After the meeting was over, we chanted slogans to draw attention to the pressure on HDP. 3 police officers were following us, and they wanted to do an identity check. While I submitted my ID, I was subjected to curses and insults, they started to curse on my mother. I said ‘Please do not curse on my deceased mother, do whatever you want but not curse on my mother’. But they continued to swear, so I pushed one of them and there happened a quarrel. Two police officers twisted my arms and dragged me 60 or 70 meters while my face was on the ground. Then they handcuffed me behind my back, started to punch and kick me (…) They took me again, pushed me onto a wall, and said ‘you made propaganda for an illegal organisation’. I said I did not, and they started being violent again. They punched me twice at the stomach. Then a police officer said ‘there is a detention warrant for him’ and they took me into the car. A police chief got in the car too and punched me almost 60 times there. And I was taken to the police station afterwards. A strongly built person came and talked to me there, and as he was standing up, he slapped me twice. And then 3 or 4 police officers came onto me, twisted my arm, squeezed my head behind the chair and punched my back.”

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2022 that, a person named O. P. who had a disagreement with a driver in Altındağ district of Ankara was subjected to physical violence of the police intervening the quarrel. It is reported that another person (F. P.) who was trying to prevent the violence was also subjected to physical violence of the police.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 21, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on January 21, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(01/217) Arrested Journalist in Istanbul…

Journalist Sedef Kabaş is detained on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in her expressions during a television programme, in Istanbul on January 22, 2022. Sedef Kabaş is arrested by the court on the same day.

(01/218) Detained Journalist in Zonguldak…

Aytaç Öztürk, a reported of the local Pusula newspaper in Zonguldak, is detained by the police raiding his house on January 23, 2022, on the grounds of sharing a news report about a car crash in which a provincial prosecutor was involved. Aytaç Öztürk is released after statement procedures on the same day.

On January 23, 2022, a cafe in Samandağ district of Hatay was raided by the police during a concert and 30 people including children are detained by the police using physical violence. It is learned that 26 people were released on the same day while 4 people are still under custody.

Zilan Korkmaz, who was detained in Mersin, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on January 21, 2022. 3 people who were also detained through the same investigation are released on judicial control conditions.

Nurullah Çetin, who was detained in Silopi district of Şırnak on January 17, 2022 is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on January 21, 2022.

Nusret Babat, who was detained in Uludere district of Şırnak on January 18, 2022 is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on January 22, 2022.

(01/223) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Abdurrahman Gök who has captured the moment Kemal Kürküt was killed by police officers at the Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır in 2017, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 20, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Abdurrahman Gök on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, for his social media posts and journalism.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 31, 2022.

(01/224) Union Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Arzu Koç, auditing board member of the Education and Science Employees’ Union (Eğitim-Sen) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on January 21, 2022.

Arzu Koç joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to release Arzu Koç and adjourned the trial to March 30, 2022.

Arzu Koç was detained in Diyarbakır on November 8, 2021 and was arrested on November 15, 2021.

The final trial of the case against Özkan Arslan, Tunceli representative of Munzur Environmental Association, is held at Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No 1 on January 21, 2022. The court sentenced Özkan Arslan to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(01/226) Investigation Against HKP Chair…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2022 that, an investigation was launched against the People’s Liberation Party chair Nurullah Ankut Efe on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ and that he made his official statement to Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate.

(01/227) Sertip Şen Case…

The first trial of the case against specialised sergeant M. T., for death of Sertip Şen, is held at Hakkari Yüksekova Heavy Penal Court on January 21, 2022. Sertip Şen lost his life on May 2, 2019, by the fire opened from the military area in Yüksekova district of Hakkari.

The indictment demands sentence for M. T. on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

After defence hearings and declarations of Sertip Şen’s family members, the court rejected to arrest the defendant specialised sergeant and adjourned the trial to February 18, 2022.

(01/228) Ankara JİTEM Case…

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 1 has acquitted former Interior Minister Mehmet Ağar, İbrahim Şahin, Korkut Eken, Ayhan Çarkın, Ayhan Akça, Ziya Bandırmalıoğlu, Ercan Ersoy, Ahmet Demirel, Ayhan Özkan, Seyfettin Lap, Enver Ulu, Uğur Şahin, Alper Tekdemir, Yusuf Yüksel, Abbas Semih Sueri, Lokman Külünk, Mahmut Yıldırım, Nurettin Güven, Muhsin Korman, on the case known as “Ankara JİTEM case”, regarding the unidentified murders committed in and around Ankara between 1993 and 1996. Ankara Regional Court Penal Department No 1 has reversed the local court’s verdict and ruled a retrial. The retrial is held on January 21, 2022.

One of the defendants, Enver Ulu, made his defence declarations at the trial. The court adjourned the trial to April 22, 2022.

(01/229) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 21, 2022, 51 people are detained in operations covering 28 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

On January 23, 2022, 1 person is detained in Ankara.

6 of 14 people including Deva Party provincial chair Mustafa Günaydı, who were detained in Kastamonu, are arrested by the court on January 22, 2022. It is learned that 6 people were released on judicial control conditions while 2 people are still under custody.

(01/230) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 181 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 72,555 as of January 21, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 184 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 72,856 as of January 22, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 185 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 65,503 as of January 23, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 85,419 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 10,947,129 as of January 23, 2022.

On January 21, 2022, 2 health workers (radiology technician Şahin Salman in Antep and pharmacist Sezai Kılkıl in Erzurum) lost their lives due to Covid-19.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 22, 2022 that prisoners demanding Biontech vaccine in Ağrı Patnos L Type were not vaccinated.
