(10/217) Child Got Wounded by Armoured Vehicle Hit in Urfa…

On October 20, 2021, a 5-year-old child (N. D.) got wounded due to being hit by an armoured vehicle in Viranşehir district of Urfa.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, 1 YJA-Star militant died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Kobane area of Syria on October 8, 2021.

(10/219) Torture and Ill-Treatment…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, 7 prisoners who were transferred from Diyarbakır D Type Closed Prison to other prisons on October 19, 2021, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during transfer, were forced to strip search and those who reject it were subjected to torture and ill-treatment again. The names of prisoners and where they were sent to are as following: Garip Kaya and İsmail Aslan, Antalya S Type Closed Prison; Mehmet Ayaz, Tokat T Type Closed Prison; Mehmet Işıktaş, Konya Ereğli T Type Closed Prison; Muhammed Peksoy, Konya Seydişehir T Type Closed Prison; Nihat Aktaş, Kayseri Bünyan T Type Closed Prison No 2; Şaban Kaygusuz, Kayseri Bünyan T Type Closed Prison No 1.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, in Şırnak T Type Closed Prison, the wards are over-capacity, the prisoners are given tap water for short times, and hot water is given twice a week for twenty minutes only, the food given to prisoners is of poor quality and the goods at the prison commissary are  sold at higher prices, the prisoners were not given cleaning supplies to protect themselves from Covid-19 pandemic, and their social, cultural and sports rights are being restricted.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, 10 prisoners who have been transferred from Kırıkkale F Type Prion to Ankara Sincan Prison under coercion on October 2, 2021 were forced to strip search and those who reject it were subjected to torture and ill-treatment and that they were put in single wards.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, Gönül Erden, former co-chair of the Health and Social Services Employees’ Union (SES), who demanded to be put in a ward in Ankara Sincan Women’s Closed Prison on October 15, 2021, was kept in a solitary cell for a while and then was put in a single ward.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, prisoners in Şırnak T Type Closed Prison were not being referred to hospitals on time and were not receiving regular treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, a female prisoner kept in Tarsus T Type Prison was subjected to sexual harassment of a soldier who was in the examination room in Tarsus Public Hospital and she was sent back to prison without being treated as she reacted against the harassment.

(10/221) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the “I Want My Job Back” protest on October 20, 2021 in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) headquarters in Ankara, by the workers who were dismissed from their job at Şişli Municipality, and detained 4 people by using physical violence. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(10/222) Arrested Person in Çankırı for ‘Insulting Atatürk’…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2021 that, 1 person (Ö. D.) who was detained in relation to damage of an Atatürk bust in schoolyard in Orta district of Çankırı on October 18, 2021, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘insulting Atatürk’.

(10/223) TJA Spokesperson on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, spokesperson of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on October 20, 2021.

The court sentenced Ayşe Gökkan to 12 years and 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’ and to 3 years on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, which in total makes a 30 years’ sentence.

Ayşe Gökkan, was detained on January 27, 2021 on the court’s verdict and was arrested on January 28, 2021.

(10/224) Journalists and Other People on Trial in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against 8 people including 5 journalists (Rojda Aydın, Halime Parlak, Nurcan Yalçın, Ahmet Kanbal and Mehmet Şah Oruç) is held at Mardin Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on October 20, 2021. The court acquitted 8 people who were detained in the police intervention to protests against trustee appointment to Mardin Municipality, on August 20, 2019.

(10/225) The Case Against CHP Executive in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu for photographs of house of Fahrettin Altun, Communications Director Republic of Turkey, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 13 on October 20, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Canan Kaftancıoğlu from 9 months to 10 years and 6 months on the charges of ‘praising an offence and offender’ and ‘instigation’. This investigation has ended in non-prosecution on September 29, 2020 however non-prosecution decision was lifted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 8, upon Fahrettin Altun’s lawyers’ appeal on November 23, 2020.

The court adjourned the trial to December 24, 2021.

(10/226) People on Trial in Istanbul for Participating in a Protest…

The first trial of the case against 9 people who have been detained by the police intervening the press declaration on February 2, 2021 in Kadıköy district of Istanbul to protest the rector appointment to Boğaziçi University by the President, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 60 on October 20, 2021.

The indictment demands jail sentence from 6 years to 11 years for 9 people on the charges of ‘damaging public property’, ‘resisting to police’.

The court lifted judicial control conditions for 7 of the defendants and adjourned the trial to May 11, 2022.

(10/227) Person on Trial in Izmir for ‘Insulting the President’…

The first trial of the case against video-activist and documentarist Oktay İnce, for social media posts of an anonymous account, is held at Izmir Kemalpaşa Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on October 19, 2021. Oktay Ince’s archive was seized by the police raiding his house in 2018.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Oktay İnce on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The court adjourned the trial to November 23, 2021.

(10/228) Birol Yıldırım Case…

It is learned that on October 20, 2021, Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 3 ruled non-jurisdiction on the case against 12 police officers including 1 arrestee, for death of Birol Yıldırım at Esenyurt district police station in Istanbul on June 5, 2021. The court decided to send the case to Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No 13 on the grounds of ‘the actions of the police officers could be considered as torture’ and the first trial will be held on January 13, 2022.

On October 20, 2021, 2 people are detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece and 33 people are detained in operations covering 5 cities through an Izmir based investigation.

(10/230) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 214 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 29,769 as of October 20, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 68,700 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 7,705,662 as of October 20, 2021.
