(02/240) Military Operation to North and South Syria…

It is learned that 2 soldiers died and 5 soldiers got wounded in an attack to Turkish Armed Forces personnel in İdlib city of Syria on February 20, 2020.

(02/241) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 20, 2020 that İda Koçak, a trans woman prisoner in Ankara Sincan L Type Prison No 1, started a hunger strike on February 11, 2020, demanding vegan food in prison.

(02/242) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the sit-in protest after press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1199 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 20, 2020 at 13.30, and detained 2 people (Nuriye Gülmen and Mehmet Dersulu).

(02/243) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration for Mustafa Koçak, İbrahim Gökçek and Helin Bölek, at Khalkedon Square in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 20, 2020 and detained 1 person (Feridun Osmanağaoğlu). Mustafa Koçak is on death fast for 233 days in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison, to demand a fair trial. İbrahim Gökçek and Helin Bölek have gone on a hunger strike on June 18, 2019 and İbrahim Gökçek turned his strike to a death fast on January 3, 2020 and Helin Bölek did it so on January 20, 2020.

Human Rights Association (IHD) Diyarbakır provincial executive Adnan Örhan, who was detained on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in Diyarbakır on February 19, 2020, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 20, 2020.

Journalist Hakkı Boltan who was detained on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in Diyarbakır on February 19, 2020, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 20, 2020.

(02/246) Detained HDP Executive and Other People in Diyarbakır…

5 people including People’s Democratic Party (HDP) provincial executive Abdurrahim Ayçiçek, who were detained on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in Diyarbakır on February 19, 2020, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 20, 2020.

(11/247) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against co-executive editors Eren Keskin and Hüseyin Aykol, and managing editor Reyhan Çapan and journalist Hasan Başak, from Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 is held on February 20, 2020. The court adjourned the trial to May 14, 2020.

The final trial of the case against journalist Murat Güneş, for a news reports he made, is held at Antep Penal Court of First Instance No 9 on February 20, 2020. The court acquitted Murat Güneş.

(02/249) Musician on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against musician Şenol Akdağ, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ at a concert he made, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 on February 20, 2020. After defence hearings the court released Şenol Akdağ and adjourned the trial.

Şenol Akdağ was detained in Istanbul on November 19, 2019 and was arrested on November 21, 2019.

(02/250) Medeni Yıldırım Case…

The case against Adem Çiftçi, a soldier on compulsory military service, for death of Medeni Yıldırım in Lice district of Diyarbakır on June 28, 2018, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 is held on February 20, 2020. Medeni Yıldırım was killed with a shot fired from military station during a march to protest the construction of a high security military station in Kalecik village of Lice. The indictment demands jail penalty up to 18 years for Adem Çiftçi for ‘killing with an eventual intent under unjust provocation’.

Defendant Adem Çiftçi did not attend the trial. It is learned that Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, from which an expert report on video footage of the incident time was demanded, stated that they could not provide the report. Turkish Radio and Television Corporation which was previously asked for the expert report has also declined the demand on the grounds of technical incapability. The court adjourned the trial to May 14, 2020.

(02/251) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On February 20, 2020, 6 people are detained in operations covering 6 cities through an Istanbul based investigation on killing of former Rize provincial security director Altuğ Verdi.

(02/252) Proceedings Against Parliamentary Members…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 20, 2020 that, 10 proceedings against 6 parliamentary members from HDP are submitted to the Constitution and Justice Committee of the Grand National Assembly.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are: HDP co-chair Pervin Buldan (1 proceeding), HDP co-chair Sezai Temelli (1 proceeding), Muş MP Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit (2 proceedings), Ağrı MP Berdan Öztürk (1 proceeding), Mardin MP Pero Dündar (1 proceeding), Van MP Murat Sarısaç (1 proceeding).
