(04/220) Person Subjected to Physical Violence of Police in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 21, 2021 that, a person who went Fatih Sultan Mehmet Police Station in Sarıyer district of Istanbul, to sign the documents as a part of judicial control conditions, was subjected to physical violence and threats of the police. The person was detained during protests against the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University and was released on judicial control conditions.

This person anonymously declared the following to the press: “I had a backpack while entering the building. A police officer held on my backpack and pushed me back. He asked me who I was, and said ‘Take off your backpack’. I told him that he should not touch me as a precaution for Covid-19. Then the police officers got angry and many of them started to came out of the building. Almost 10 police officers came to me and pushed me back. They started to push and drag me around. Then a police officer came by, he pushed me at the stomach with a long barrelled weapon and slapped me so severely that I reeled back. When my friend tried to intervene, they said ‘Nobody slapped anybody here ok?’. The police chief came later; he had threatened me earlier for I went into the station with my headphones. He recognized me and said ‘I will push you to the wall, make you turn around and search all over your body’, and then they pushed me out of the building.”

It is learned that this person had a medical report evidencing the violence and will file a criminal complaint.

It is learned that the appeal made on April 20, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(04/222) Detained Former Co-Mayors and Provincial Council Members in Hakkari…

4 people (former co-mayors Servet Tunç and Mehmet Kanar, and provincial council members Faris Çetinkaya and Hacı Yanar) who were detained in house raids in Çukurca district of Hakkari on April 20, 2021 are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(04/223) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against İnci Aydın, executive editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper, for a news report published on July 17, 2020; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Curt No 26 on April 20, 2021.

The court acquitted İnci Aydın.

(04/224) Dismissal of Administrative Board of an Association…

It is learned that the Ministry of Interior launched a probe against Retired Military Officers Association of Turkey (TESUD) which was supported the declaration about Montreux Convention signed by 104 former navy officers, on April 8, 2021. As a result of civil inspectors’ and auditors’ report, the Ministry of Interior dismissed the board chair Namık Kemal Çalışkan and the administrative board of TESUD on April 20, 2021.

On April 20, 2021, the police removed the banner about Istanbul Convention hung on Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) office in Seyhan district of Adana.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 20, 2021 that banners and posters of Republican People’s Party (CHP) asking “Where is the 128 billion dollars?” or any other posters and banners that would evocate it, are banned by Bartın Governorate.

(04/227) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that http://jinnews20.xyz/, http://umutgazetesi23.org and http://yenidemokrasi16.net websites are banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order” by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 2 on April 20, 2021.

(04/228) Ban of Events in Siirt…

Siirt Governorate made a declaration on April 20, 2021 and announced that meetings and demonstrations, indoor and open-door assemblies, press declarations, sit-in protests, opening stands and tents, collecting petitions, commemorations and so on are banned for 15 days as of April 20, 2021.

(04/229) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On April 20, 2021, 30 people are detained in operations covering 17 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

(04/230) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against former prosecutor Murat Dalkuş is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on April 20, 2021. The court sentenced the defendant to 6 years 10 months and 15 days on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(04/231) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 346 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 2,895 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on April 20, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 61,028.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 36,613 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 4,384,624 as of April 20, 2021.
