The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) declared that the flood hitting several provinces in Western Black Sea region on August 11, 2021 killed 82 people as of August 21, 2021. The number of deceased people is 71 in Kastamonu, 10 in Sinop and 1 in Bartın while 34 people are reported as missing.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, 5 HPG militants died in clashes between militants and security forces in Kurtalan district of Sirrt on June 1, 4, and 22, 2021.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, 3 HPG militants died in a clash between militants and security forces in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on August 5, 2021.
(08/190) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler T Type Closed Prison were subjected to verbal and physical violence of the correction officers fort hey reject to stand in single file in corridors to give fingerprints on August 12, 2021. It is also learned that the prisoners were not taken to prison infirmary for treatment, and they were subjected to disciplinary proceedings and were threatened by the correction officers saying ‘I am the God here. You will do whatever I say’.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, prisoners in Van T Type Closed Prison were not given the books and magazines they demand, Yeni Yaşam and Evrensel newspapers were not given to them, social, cultural and sports rights of prisoners were being restricted, non-contact visits are limited to twice a month.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, prisoners on hunger strike in Van High Security Prison were not given the necessary nutrition, and they were subjected to disciplinary proceedings.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, prisoners in Van F Type Closed Prison were not given Yeni Yaşam newspaper, social, cultural and sports rights of prisoners were being restricted, non-contact visits are limited to twice a month and the water given to wards was limited.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 22, 2021 that, 9 prisoners (Democratic Society Congress [DTK] co-chair Leyla Güven, Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] Diyarbakır co-chair Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, Socialist Party of the Oppressed [ESP] deputy chair Fethiye Ok Çiçek, Beritan Anahtar, Emine Erkan, Nuray Çelik, Dicle Bozan, Mihriban Şorli, Remziye Yaşar) are subjected to disciplinary proceedings on the grounds of “dance a verbal halay in an inexplicable language and sing anthems in an inexplicable language” as they sang Kurdish songs on August 15, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, lawyer Harika Günay Karataş from the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) was subjected to verbal and physical violence of the soldiers at Yüksekova District Gendarmerie Command where she went to meet her clients under custody; and that she was forced out of the building by soldiers.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 20, 2021 that, a delivery person (Eyüp E.) in Hakkari, was subjected to physical violence of the persons claimed to be undercover police officers, after he left the police station where he went to make official statement upon the complaint made by a recipient and spouse of a police officer. Eyüp E. stated the following to the press: “As I got off the car almost 100 hundred meters to my home, a white Fiat brand car was following us; four police officers with snow masks got off the car and they forcibly put me in the car. Two police officers beat me in the car.”

Iyi Party Istanbul provincial chair Buğra Kavuncu is attacked by an anonymous person as he left Halk TV channel studio in Bakırköy district of Istanbul on August 20, 2021. 1 person (S. O.) is detained in relation to the attack on August 21, 2021.
(08/195) Attempt of Abduction in Ankara…
Alev Şahin, an architect who was dismissed from her job by a state of emergency decree, declared on social media that she was attempted to be abducted by 6 people who present themselves as police officers, near her home in Ankara on August 21, 2021. Alev Şahin stated the following: “They told me that I had to give testimony and to go to the station with them. I told them I would go there with my lawyer. Then a black panel van with license plate number 34 YJV 21 came around, and they insisted that I should get in the car and go with them. I said I would never get in any car without a detention warrant. They wanted to talk to me at a nearby park for I rejected to get in. (…) Then I called my lawyer and told what happened, and these people got in their car and left.”
(08/196) Police Intervention to a Protest in Hatay…
The police intervened the press declaration in front of Edibe Özçelik’s home in Samandağ district of Hatay on August 22, 2021 and detained 4 people (Merve Demirel, Ümit Özçelik, Can Kaba, Şura Başer) by using physical violence. Detained people are released after statement procedures on August 23, 2021. Edibe Özçelik had a heart attack when her house was raided by the police in Samandağ district of Hatay and lost her life on January 20, 2020.

8 people including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) provincial executive Evliya Alkan who were detained by gendarmerie in house raids in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on August 19, 2021, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on August 22, 2021. Detained people are: Cevdet Bülbün, Evliya Alkan, Erdem Eraydın, Mehmet Reşat Özdemir, Cengiz Özdemir, Seyhan Özdemir, Casim Kılıçak and Bahattin Geylani.

It is learned that at least 19 people including HDP members and executives are detained in house raids in Kartal, Sancaktepe, Sultanbeyli, Esenyurt and Sultangazi districts of Istanbul on August 20, 2021. Detained people are: Elvan Uçar Kordu, Ferhat Yıldız, Ramazan Kuni, Ayatullah Yavuz, Erol Aktaş, Veysel Özdaş, Nizamettin Açık, Metin Beyret, Suat Yıldız, Selim Boğa, Bilal Adıgüzel, Bedrettin Aytun, Kerbela Bakır, İsmail İnedi, İlknur Yusufoğlu, Cahit Kanmaz, Memet Özatik, Kıvanç Meni, Fırat Oğul.

Fatma Bilge, one of 6 people including who were detained in Ankara for their social media posts on August 18, 2021, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on August 20, 2021. 5 people (Ece Şimşek from HDP’s Press Office, Şehriban Başak, Mehmet Duymaz, Devrim Temel, Ahmet Özkaya) are released on judicial control conditions.

Serhat Kadırhan, former co-mayor of Şırnak is detained in Diyarbakır on August 20, 2021. The reason of detention is unknown.

It is learned that Kızıltepe Sub-governorate’s Office rejected the application of Kızıltepe district Labour and Democracy Platform to hold an event to encourage Covid-19 vaccination in public on August 20, 2021; on the grounds of Mardin Governorate’s Office’s ban on events in the city.

The Ministry of Health declared that 204 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 19,918 as of August 20, 2021.
The Ministry of Health declared that 232 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 19,351 as of August 21, 2021.
The Ministry of Health declared that 206 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 18,622 as of August 22, 2021.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 54,533 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 6,215,663 as of August 21, 2021.
