(10/205) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is claimed in the news coverage of October 19, 2021 that, Adem Özbey, a prisoner kept in Van F Type Prison, was taken from his ward to be interrogated and was subjected to torture and ill-treatment during interrogation. It is stated in the news reports that Adem Özbey was then taken back to his ward. A prisoner stated the following to the press: “We want this to be covered by the press. The public should hear about this. They do not take these prisoners to hospital, they took them under the name of “interrogation” to an unknown place. They pressure and torture them. Those who were taken and brought back have marks of torture on their bodies.”

It is learned from the news coverage of October 19, 2021 that, prisoners in Yozgat T Type Prison No 2 are banned from speaking Kurdish on the phone, and phone conversations of those who speak Kurdish are interrupted.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 19, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit him was not responded.

(10/207) Police Intervention to a Protest in Antalya…

The police intervened the protest demanding release of ill prisoner Ayşe Özdoğan, held in Antalya on October 19, 2021. The police detained 2 people (Ayşe Özdoğan’s mother Fatma Karakuzu and Melek Çetinkaya) and they are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(10/208) Private Security Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The private security officers intervened the sit-in protest of students for housing rights at Istanbul Technical University on October 19, 2021. It is learned that students were taken out of the building and at least 1 student was injured.

(10/209) Detained People Through an Istanbul Based Investigation…

On October 15, 2021, 91 people have been detained in operations covering 15 cities through an Istanbul based investigation. On October 19, 2021, 1 person (Murat Yüksel) is arrested by the court, and the number of arrestees raised to 5 while 76 people are still under custody.

(10/210) HDP Executive, City Council Member, Association Chair and Other People on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against 6 people (Berken Kızılboğa, city council member from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Tuşba district of Van; Serap Güvenç, the Star Women’s Association chair; Handan Karakoyun, HDP Van co-chair and Havar Derya, Mukaddes Karakoç and Rojbin Akdağ, activists of Free Women’s Movement) is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 7 on October 19, 2021. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to December 1, 2021. On November 1, 2019, 15 people were detained and 2 of them were arrested, 13 people were released on judicial control conditions, and the case was opened against 6 of them.

(10/211) People on Trial for Participating in a Protest in Izmir…

The trial of the case against 24 people, for participating in “Las Tesis” dance performance against male violence against women, is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on October 19, 2021. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 31, 2022.

(10/212) Investigation Against Journalist…

It is learned that Van Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Oktay Candemir for a social media post and that he made his official statement to Van Provincial Security Directorate on October 19, 2021.

(10/213) Investigation Against Actress…

It is learned that an investigation is launched against actress Berna Laçin for her social media post saying “the cherries are expensive”, and that she made her official statement through the investigation on October 18, 2021.

(10/214) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the article of Fatih Polat about a book “Yaralı Yonca”, published on https://www.evrensel.net/ in 2015, is banned to access on the grounds of “protesting national security and public order” by Burdur Penal Court of Peace on October 19, 2021.

(10/215) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On October 19, 2021, 108 people are detained in operations covering 41 cities through an Izmir based investigation; 54 people are detained in operations covering 16 cities through an Ankara based investigation; and 30 people are detained in operations covering 22 cities through a Balıkesir based investigation.

(10/216) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 223 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 30,862 as of October 19, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 68,486 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 7,675,902 as of October 19, 2021.
