It is learned that the appeal made on July 20, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.
(07/161) Detained Person in Trabzon for ‘Insulting Atatürk’…
It is learned that 1 person (S. V.) who was detained on the grounds of damaging an Atatürk statue in Akçaabat district of Trabzon on July 18, 2023, was released after statement procedures on July 19, 2023.
(07/162) Person on Trial in Istanbul…
The first trial of the case against Ayten Dönmez, Kocaeli MP candidate of the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) who was arrested on April 26, 2023, on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on July 19, 2023. The court decided to consolidate the case with another case on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’, to release Ayten Dönmez with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial.
(07/163) Çorlu Train Crash Case…
The trial of the case against 4 officials of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) about the train crash on July 8, 2018, in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ where 25 people died and 328 people got wounded, is held at Çorlu Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on July 19, 2023. 4 officials of TCDD on trial are: Turgut Kurt, railway maintenance manager at TCDD Regional Directorate No 1 Halkalı Railway Maintenance Directorate No 14; Özkan Polat, railway maintenance and repair chief at Çerkezköy Maintenance and Repair, Celaleddin Çabuk, line maintenance and repair official at Railway Maintenance Directorate and Çetin Yıldırım, chief in charge of bridges who has signed the annual inspection report issued on May 2018.
The indictment demands jail sentence from 2 years to 15 years for defendants on the charge of ‘reckless killing and injury’. The court adjourned the trial to September 1, 2023.

The trial of the case against the Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, with a request for compensation of 250,000 Turkish Liras upon the complaint of Mehmet Cengiz, the Chairman of the Board of Cengiz Holding, is held at Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance No. 18 on July 19, 2023. The court dismissed the case.

It is learned that an armed attack by anonymous person or persons was carried on the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) office in Altındağ district of Ankara on July 19, 2023 which caused material damage to the office.
(07/166) Discriminatory and Hateful Statement by Uşak University…
Uşak University Press Advisory issued a discriminatory and hateful statement on July 19, 2023, regarding a student carrying the LGBTI+ flag at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on July 17, 2023. The following was said in the statement: “During the graduation ceremony of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Faculty of Science and Letters of Uşak University on 17.07.2023, one of the graduate students opened an LGBT rag, which was hidden under the clothes, with a sudden move during the ceremony without the permission and knowledge of any official. It is impossible for the administrative units of our university to approve and support this personal action. Official proceedings have been initiated regarding the personal behaviour in question”.
