It is learned that the appeal made on January 19, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

Bitlis Journalists’ Association chair Sinan Aygül is detained in Tatvan district of Bitlis on January 19, 2023, upon the complaint of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Bitlis MP over a news report. Sinan Aygül is released on the same day.
(01/157) City Council Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The final trial of the case against Bahar Karakaş, a city council member from HDP in Eğil district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 10 on January 19, 2023. The court sentenced Bahar Karakaş Uluğ to 7 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ruled her to be deprived of custody of her children and to be released with the verdict.
Bahar Karakaş was dismissed from her post on June 15, 2021 by the Ministry of Interior. She was detained in Diyarbakır on April 5, 2021 and was arrested on April 12, 2021.

The first trial of the case against Jinnews editor Nişmiye Güler, for her social media posts, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 27 on January 19, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Nişmiye Güler on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings the court acquitted Nişmiye Güler.

The final trial of the case against the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul provincial chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, on the grounds of insulting the Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun is held at Istanbul Anadolu Civil Court of First Instance No. 15 on January 19, 2023. The court rejected Fahrettin Altun’s claim for compensation.

The trial of the case against CHP Party Assembly member Eren Erdem, for the social media post reading “HUNGER = RTE” is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No. 63 on January 19, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence from 1 year to 4 years for Eren Erdem on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ and requested political ban. The court adjourned the trial.

The final trial of the case against lawyer Seçil Ege Değerli, for the sit-in protest against the bio-gas plant project in Salihli district of Manisa, is held at Salihli Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on January 20, 2023. The court acquitted Seçil Ege Değerli.

The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on January 19, 2023. The court decided to wait for the search warrant for Bülent Karaoğlu with a red notice and adjourned the trial to March 2, 2023.
The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then.

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 1 has acquitted former Interior Minister Mehmet Ağar, İbrahim Şahin, Korkut Eken, Ayhan Çarkın, Ayhan Akça, Ziya Bandırmalıoğlu, Ercan Ersoy, Ahmet Demirel, Ayhan Özkan, Seyfettin Lap, Enver Ulu, Uğur Şahin, Alper Tekdemir, Yusuf Yüksel, Abbas Semih Sueri, Lokman Külünk, Mahmut Yıldırım, Nurettin Güven, Muhsin Korman, on the case known as “Ankara JİTEM case”, regarding the unidentified murders committed in and around Ankara between 1993 and 1996. Ankara Regional Court Penal Department No. 1 has overturned the local court’s verdict and ruled a retrial. The retrial is held on January 20, 2023. The court rejected to forcibly bring the defendants and adjourned the trial to March 10, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 20, 2023, that the 1,970,000 Turkish Liras in the bank accounts of the Nesin Foundation which was blocked on the grounds of an unauthorized donation campaign were transferred to the Treasury.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 19, 2023, Tunceli Penal Court of Peace ruled a ban on publication, distribution and sale of two books by Murat Kahraman, “Bitmeyen Veda” (Never Ending Farewell – Tekin Publications) and “Çığlık” (Scream – Sancı Publications), and decided to confiscate all published copies of the books.
