(01/179) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of January 19, 2021 that, Ömer Levent, a prisoner who was transferred from Antep H Type Prison to Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison under coercion on January 4, 2021, was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers because he rejected to strip search at the entrance of prison.
It is learned from the news coverage of January 19, 2021 that, 2 prisoners (Yücel Yavuz and Devrim Taylan Eryılmaz) are kept alone in wards for 3 people in Ankara Sincan F Type Prison No 1. It is also stated in the news reports that 2 prisoners were imposed a penalty of 11 days of solitary cell confinement as a result of disciplinary proceedings against them.

On January 19, 2021, 20 people are detained in operations covering 10 cities through a Balıkesir based “PKK/KCK investigation”. The names of detained people are unknown.

On January 19, 2021, at least 35 people are detained in house raids of gendarmerie in Dibek, Budak and Yolçatı rural neighbourhoods of Lice district of Diyarbakır. The names of detained people are unknown.

The first trial of the case against journalist Cengiz Çandar, on the charge of ‘praising offence and offender’ in a social media post in 2017, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 30 on January 19, 2021.
Cengiz Çandar did not attend the trial for being abroad. The court rejected to get official statement of Cengiz Çandar on rogatory and issued a detention warrant for him, adjourning the trial to April 15, 2021.

The final trial of the case against 7 people including journalist Emrah Çaçan and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Bursa co-chair Aynur Yılmaz, for their social media posts, is held on January 19, 2021.
The court sentenced 1 person (Davut Toktaş) to 3 years and 2 months, 1 person (Resul Baykara) to 1 year and 6 months on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court acquitted Emrah Çaçan, Aynur Yılmaz and other 3 people.

The final trial of the case against Selmet Şükür is held at Sakarya Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 19, 2021. The court sentenced the defendant to 3 years 1 month and 15 days on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

The Ministry of Health declared that 167 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 761 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 19, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 6,818.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 24,328 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,399,781 as of January 19, 2021.
It is learned that 2 health workers (radiology technician Ramazan Ateş and medicals secretary Hatice Arıkan in Hatay) lost their lives from Covid-19 on January 19, 2021.
