It is learned that 6 people including 3 children died when a rubber boat carrying refugees fell into the sea off Kuşadası district of Aydın on February 19, 2025.
(02/194) Child Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment of the Police in Ankara…
It is claimed in the news coverage of February 19, 2025 that, a child named C.D. (15, m) was subjected to torture and ill-treatment by the police officers who stopped him for driving without a license in Ankara on February 17, 2025. It is stated in the news reports that the child was also subjected to torture and ill-treatment at Aktepe Police Station. It is learned that C.D. was injured in various parts of his body due to torture and ill-treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 19, 2025 that, the release of Gülten Akün, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison, who completed her life sentence on June 19, 2024, is postponed for the second time by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK) and extended until August 18, 2025. Gülten Akgün’s release had been postponed once before for 8 months.

On February 19, 2025, it is learned that the tent set up by Zafer Party members for justice vigil near Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison, where Zafer Party chair Ümit Özdağ is kept, was removed by gendarmerie on the grounds of a ban order of Silivri Sub-Governorate.

Journalist Abdullah Kaya was detained on February 19, 2025 due to making illegal organization propaganda in a social media post. Abdullah Kaya was released by the criminal court of peace on the same day with a ban on leaving the country.

Journalist Cengiz Oğlağı was detained on February 19, 2025 in Cizre district of Şırnak province on the grounds of the footage he had taken while following news reports in 2012. Cengiz Oğlağı and another person named Belçim Kalay, who were detained through the same investigation, were arrested on the same day by the criminal court of peace on the allegation of ‘being an illegal organization member’.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, former President of the Central Council of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and board member of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV), for her remarks on torture and impunity in a TV show, was held at Istanbul 69th Criminal Court of First Instance on February 20, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for Şebnem Korur Fincancı on the charge of ‘denigrating the Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the state’. The court acquitted Şebnem Korur Fincancı.

The trial of the case against 69 people for the commemoration on the first anniversary of October 10 Massacre continued on February 19, 2025 at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 13. Following the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to February 24, 2025.

It is learned that Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (TÜSİAD) High Advisory Council Chairman Ömer Aras and TÜSİAD President Orhan Turan were taken to the prosecutor’s office by the police from their homes on February 19, 2025 through the investigation initiated by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on the charges of ‘attempting to influence fair trial’ and ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. 2 people are released by the criminal court of peace with a ban on leaving the country.

It is learned that http://mezopotamyaajansi41.com/ website of Mezopotamya News Agency is banned to access on the grounds of ‘protection of national security and public order’ by Adıyaman Penal Court of Peace No 2 on February 19, 2025.
(02/203) Television Channels Penalized by RTÜK…
On February 19, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 19, 2025 that Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines to SZC TV channel for the statements in “Para Politikaları” program and to NOW TV, SZC TV, TELE 1 and Halk TV channels for the news reports about Serdar Öktem, who was arrested during the trial on Sinan Ateş’s murder.
It is also reported that RTÜK imposed administrative fines and broadcasting suspensions on NOW TV channel for the TV series “Şakir Pasha Family”.
