It is learned from the news coverage of February 19, 2024, that correction officers in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison caused material damage to prisoners’ belongings during ward searches and committed verbal violence against prisoners.

(02/185) Political Party Executives Detained in Istanbul…

On February 20, 2024, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Esenyurt district co-chairs Bahar Karataş and Fatih Ergün were detained in Istanbul on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. Bahar Karataş and Fatih Ergün were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the same day.

DEM Party Youth Assembly member Murat Sönmez was detained on February 19, 2024, in the Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır on the grounds of a search warrant and taken to Diyarbakır Bağlar District Security Directorate.

(02/187) Lawyer Detained due to Social Media Posts…

On February 19, 2024, lawyer Feyza Altun was detained and an investigation was initiated against her due to a social media post on the grounds of ‘publicly inciting a section of the public with different characteristics in terms of social class, race, religion, sect or region to hatred and hostility against another section’. Feyza Altun was released by the criminal peace judgeship on February 20, 2024, on judicial control condition. It is reported that the Istanbul Beykoz Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office appealed the decision.

On February 19, 2024, Memduh Çalışan, who shared a video on social media about his mother who could not benefit from ground handling services at Istanbul Airport because the service was not provided in Kurdish, was detained due to ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ as part of an investigation against him. Memduh Çalışan was released after statement procedures.

The retrial of the case against Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey Representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) chair and HRFT executive board member Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, for participating in the “Editor-in-Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper, which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, was held on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on February 20, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to May 29, 2024.

The trial of the case against Çağlar Demirel, former Diyarbakır MP of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), on the allegations of insulting the President, continued on February 20, 2024, at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 5. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded Çağlar Demirel’s acquittal. The court adjourned the trial to March 21, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 19, 2024, that 143 news reports and social media posts about Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Mersin MP on https://www.birgun.net, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr and https://halktv.com.tr were banned to access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 5 on February 19, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and it is decided to take the content off the air.

The Governorate of Şırnak announced on February 18, 2024, that all kinds of open-door meetings and demonstrations, mass welcoming and farewell ceremonies, press statements, sit-ins, rallies, meetings, tents, petition campaigns, opening stands, mass funeral ceremonies and cemetery visits, commemorations, festivals, concerts, entertainment, play representations, demonstrations, etc. to be held throughout the province, all kinds of audio and visual activities that can be carried out with sound broadcasting devices, all kinds of aerial activities such as wishing lanterns, balloons, drone-paramotor, etc., and all kinds of actions and activities such as flyers, stickers, stickers, paramotor, etc., distributing flyers, stickers, brochures, etc., hanging banners and posters, etc. are banned for 3 days between February 19, 2024 and February 21, 2024.
