(12/181) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 19, 2022 that, 3 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Metina area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on December 10, 2022.

(12/182) Person Died in Prison…

It is learned that ill prisoner Vural Avar (85) died in Ankara Sincan F Type Prison on December 20, 2022.

(12/183) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 19, 2022 that, journalist Ceylan Şahin who is kept in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, was not treated at the hospital as she rejected being examined in handcuffs and was taken back to prison.

(12/184) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police used pepper spray to intervene in the people gathering outside of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kadıköy district office in Istanbul on December 19, 2022 to protest police violence against the HDP Istanbul provincial co-chair Ferhat Encü during the intervention against the march in Kadıköy on December 18, 2022. It is learned that 103 people were detained by the police using physical violence, including HDP’s provincial co-chairs İlknur Birol and Ferhat Encü. Detained people are released on December 20, 2022.

The police intervened in the press declaration held for the same cause in Izmit district of Kocaeli on December 19, 2022, and detained 6 people including HDP’s Kocaeli provincial co-chairs Şahabettin Işık and Aynur Santos. Detained people were: Şahabettin Işık, Aynur Santos, İdris Ay, Ali Akbal, Alattin Artuer and Necati Altıtoprak.

It is learned that the police prevented the press declaration to be held for the same cause, outside of HDP district office in Efeler district of Aydın on December 19, 2022; and that the press declaration was held despite the prevention.

(12/185) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration held in front of Bayrampaşa Prison in Istanbul on December 2022, on the anniversary of “Operation Back to Life”, which killed death of 32 people in 20 prison, when it was conducted to enable conversion of the prisons to F Type prisons and to end hunger strikes in prisons on December 19, 2000. The police detained 3 people (Hasan Basri Yıldız, Hasan Karapınar and Yıldız Turan) who were released later on the same day.

(12/186) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which was made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 19, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(12/187) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened against the union members who participated for the press declaration in front of the Grand National Assembly on December 20, 2022 to protest the draft law about dismissing public employees’ unions not exceeding the 2 percent threshold from collective bargaining bonus, and forced them away from the building. It is learned that the press declaration was held elsewhere.

(12/188) Detained Writer in Ankara…

Writer Fatih Yaşlı is detained by the police getting him off the bus at Ankara Intercity Terminal on December 19, 2022, on the grounds that he did not make his official statement through an investigation opened against him. Fatih Yaşlı is released the same day after statement procedures.

(12/190) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

9 people, including a person with epilepsy, who were detained on December 19, 2022 on the grounds that they did not stand up while the National Anthem was being played before the Amedspor-Menemenspor football match played in Diyarbakır on December 18, 2022; are released by the court on judicial control conditions and with a ban on watching games at the stadium.

(12/191) Former Co-Mayors on Trial…

After the Constitutional Court’s decision regarding former Hakkari co-mayors Dilek Hatipoğlu and Nurullah Çiftçi, that their right to a fair trial was violated, the retrial of the case is held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on December 19, 2022. Dilek Hatipoğlu and Nurullah Çiftçi attended the trial and stated that the fact that they were brought to Hakkari after a long journey and the conditions of the prison restrains them from making their defences both physically and mentally. Considering these statements as the right to remain silent, the court reiterated its previous decision and sentenced 2 people to 11 years and 3 months each on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and rejected to release them.

(12/192) Former MP on Trial…

The trial of the case against HDP’s former Diyarbakır MP Çağlar Demirel, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No. 5 on December 20, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to February 2, 2023.

(12/193) Journalist on Trial in Rize…

The trial of the case against journalist Gençağa Karafazlı, for his news report about harassment allegations against an academic working at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, is held at Rize Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on December 20, 2022. After defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to March 1, 2023.

(12/194) Retired Navy Officers on Trial for Their Statements…

The final trial of the case against 103 retired Turkish Navy officers on the grounds of publishing a joint statement on the Montreux Straits Convention is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 20 on December 20, 2022. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded acquittal of 91 officers and sentence for 12 officers on the charge of “contracting to commit a crime against the security of the state or the constitutional order”. The court acquitted all defendants.

It is learned that the news reports about the drugs found in an intercity funeral transport vehicle, published on www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://www.birgun.net, https://halktv.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of Peace on December 19, 2022.

(12/196) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that 13 people were detained in operations covering 8 cities through an Ankara based investigation and 17 people were detained in operations covering 12 cities through an Izmir based investigation on December 20, 2022.
