(09/009) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

Ministry of National Defence declared that 1 soldier (Furkan Erbil) died in a car crash in Şemdinli district of Hakkari on September 1, 2020.

(09/010) Suspicious Death of a Prisoner…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 1, 2020 that Kadir Kurt, a prisoner in Konya Ereğli T Type Prison lost his life on August 23, 2020. Ereğli Public Prosecutor’s Office made a declaration on August 25, 2020 and claimed that Kadir Kurt has killed himself however, Kadir Kurt’s father stated that Kadir Kurt was subjected to physical violence of the wardens in prison and was threatened by them. Kadir Kurt’s father states the following: “My son told me on the phone that two wardens beat him for 25 minutes and that he was subjected to other treatments that he cannot tell me to not to upset me. What made Kadir kill himself is the wardens’ violence he was subjected to and prison administration not doing anything although they knew it. Kadir told us several times that these two wardens beat him in places where surveillance cameras do not cover.”

It is learned that Kadir Kurt sent a letter to Civil Society in the Penal System Association and stated the following: “I am in Ereğli T Type Prison for 3 years. (…) The fax messages I sent to my family are not sent to them. My letters, petitions, fax messages are not sent either. I want to get in touch with you in the first place.”

(09/011) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 1, 2020 that, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş was not allowed to have a non-contact visit with his children at Edirne F Type Prison, on the grounds of precautions for Covid-19 pandemic.

(09/012) Watchman Subjected to Police Violence Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 1, 2020 that a quarrel took place between a watchman (B. B.) and a police officer (A. U. T.) and the watchman was subjected to physical violence of the police.

It is reported that both of the officers were suspended and an investigation is initiated.

(09/013) People Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment of Gendarmerie in Edirne…

It is learned that 2 people (İsa Sefa and Halis Güven) who were detained by gendarmerie, in Edirne on August 30, 2020, in allegation of illegal attempt to flee, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment under custody. It is reported that 2 people were injured at their faces and bodies.

It is learned that 2 people got a medical report evidencing the physical violence and will make a criminal complaint against officers on duty.

One of these 2 people, İsa Sefa, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘border violation’ on September 1, 2020, while Halis Güven is still under custody.

(09/014) Bans and Interventions Against 1 September International Day of Peace Events…

The police prevented the “Peace Chain” of HDP in Urfa for International Day of Peace on September 1, 2020. The police intervened the group marching upon prevention and detained 6 people including HDP executives. It is learned that the police hit one person at the face with a walkie- talkie and this person was taken to hospital due to being injured. 4 of detained people (HDP provincial executive Ahmet İstek, Hilvan district co-chair Çiğdem Karageçili, Ulaş Çoban and 1 more person) are released after statement procedures on the same day. It is learned that 2 people (HDP Party Assembly member İzzet Karadağ and Haliliye district co-chair Müslüm Arslan) are still under custody.

The “Peace Chain” in Sur district of Diyarbakır is not allowed on the grounds of precautions for Covid-19 pandemic.

It is learned that the International Day of Peace event in Van is not allowed and HDP members coming from Çaldıran, Muradiye and Erciş districts were not allowed into the city center.

(09/015) Interventions to Protests About Death Fasts in Prisons and Death of Lawyer Ebru Timtik…

1 person (Erkan Munar) is detained in police intervention to a protest about death fasts in prisons in front of President’s house in Üsküdar district of Istanbul on September 1, 2020. Detained person is released on the same day.

(09/016) Director Kazım Öz on Trial…

The final trial of the case against film director Kazım Öz is held at Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No 2 on September 1, 2020. The indictment demands sentence up to 15 years on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted Kazım Öz.

(09/017) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On September 1, 2020, 59 people are detained in operations covering 30 citied through an Istanbul based investigation against Turkish Armed Forces personnel; and 14 people are detained in operations covering 8 cities through a Kayseri based investigation.

3 people who were detained in Çeşme district of Izmir in alleged attempt of illegally crossing abroad are arrested by the court on September 1, 2020.

(09/018) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that 2 entries about death of Duygu Delen on https://eksisozluk.com/ website are banned by Antep Penal Court of Peace No 4 on August 28, 2020 and by Antep Penal Court of Peace No 5 on September 1, 2020.

(09/019) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 47 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,572 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on September 1, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 6,417 and total number of confirmed cases is 271,705 as of September 1, 2020.
