(03/022) Earthquakes in Antep, Maraş and Hatay…

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on March 2, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,911 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,543 of them were identified and given to their families, 273 children were in the hospital, 95 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 81 children could not be identified.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors, including Nurdağı district mayor Ökkeş Kavak, who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 218 as of March 2, 2023.

(03/023) Detained Journalists in Istanbul…

Birgün newspaper reporters Asena Tunca, Ezgi Can Ceylan and Ahmet Can Sarıkaya, were detained by the police using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs, while they were reporting the press declaration of the Left Party which was held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on March 1, 2023 regarding the earthquakes. It is learned that the journalists were released on the same day.

(03/024) Police Intervention to Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration of the Left Party which was held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on March 1, 2023 regarding the earthquakes; and detained 77 people including the Left Party central executive board member Alper Taş, party assembly members Kemal Koç and Nuriye Alsancak and İstanbul provincial chair Deniz Demirdöğen by using physical violence. It is learned that 74 people were released on the same day while 3 people were still under custody. It is also reported that the police prevented journalists from recording the intervention.

(03/025) Preventions and Interventions Against 8 March Women’s Day Events…

The police prevented the march to be held in Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul on March 1, 2023 by the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) as part of 8 March International Women’s Day events. The police intervened in the sit-in protest against prevention and detained 5 people.

(03/026) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 1, 2023 that, some prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion. The number of the transferred prisoners, their names and to which prisons they were transferred to could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 2, 2023 that, in Mersin Tarsus Women’s Prison where prisoners from the earthquake region were transferred, the capacity was over and the food and water given to prisoners were inadequate.

(03/027) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Tunceli…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 1, 2023 that, a person named Erkan Gül was subjected to torture and ill-treatment and he was put a sack over his head during the police raid to his house in Tunceli.

(03/028) Detained Journalist…

Journalist Gökhan Özbek was detained in Ankara on March 1, 2023. The reason for detention is unknown.

(03/029) Detained People in Izmir…

It is learned that 3 members of the Students’ Collective and Feminist Collective were detained on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, in house raids in Izmir on March 1, 2023. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day.

(03/030) Detained People in Tunceli…

On March 1, 2023, 2 people (Neriman Dönmez, Erkan Gül) were detained on the grounds of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’, in house raids in Tunceli.

(03/031) Musician on Trial in Tunceli…

The retrial of the case against musician Yılmaz Çelik is held at Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on March 1, 2023, as the Erzurum Regional Court has overturned the local court’s acquittal. The court sentenced Yılmaz Çelik to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

(03/032) İnanç Özkeskin Case…

The Constitutional Court’s decision on the appeal of İnanç Özkeskin’s family, who died by the police fire during a raid to his house in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on June 13, 2017, is published on the Official Gazette on March 1, 2023. The Constitutional Court decided that the right to live was violated and that his family should be paid a compensation of 90,000 Turkish Liras and the verdict should be sent to Istanbul Anadolu Public Prosecutor’s Office.

(03/033) Ban of Watching Sports Matches…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 1, 2023 that, some Fenerbahçe football club fans were sent notifications about prohibition from watching sports competitions, on the grounds of “expressions and behaviours that could be perceived as insult” in accordance with the Article 14/1 of the Law No. 6222, based on the slogans that called the government to resign during the Fenerbahçe-Konyaspor match played in Istanbul on February 25, 2023. It is stated in the news reports that the number of fans who were sent notifications was 74.
