(03/018) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
According to the news in the press, in Tekirdag F Type Prison cameras were put in baths and toilets in the rooms. Also the letters were not given to prisoners, the letters written by the prisoners are not sent, and books of the prisoners are seized by the guards.
(03/019) Co-Mayor Detained…
The Co-Mayor of Beytussebap district of Sırnak was detained on 1 March 2017 during a house raid. In the same operation Cindi Ataman and Davut Ataman was also detained. The detainees are taken to Beytussebap Police Headquarter.
(03/020) Arrested Press Employee…
Hayati Yılmaz, an employee of daily Azadiya Welat which was closed down by a Decree with the Force of Law, was detained on 17 February 2017. He was taken to court on 1 March 2017 and was arrested for ‘being a member of an illegal organization.’
Yilmaz was tortured under custody. Hhis right cheekbone was fractured there were bruises on his face due to torture.
(03/021) Children Detained while Selling Tea…
According to the news appeared in press on 1 March 2017, police and municipal police intervened 3 children who were selling tea in Van, their equipment were seized. 3 children were also reportedly detained forcibly for resisting the police. The names of the detainees are as follows: R.D. (10, m), B.G. (10, m) and R.I. (12, m).
(03/022) Police Intervention to 8 of March Activity in Diyarbakir…
Members of KESK, DİSK and TMMOB made a press statement on 1 March 2017 in Diyarbakır about 8 March Women’s Day. The police intervened the press statement and detained 4 women. The names of the detainnes are as follows: Arin Zümrüt, Arzu Koç, Derya Göngür and Bahar Ulu.
(03/023) Detentions and Arrests…
Abdi Aykut and the headperson of Doganlar village Muzaffer Sarı were arrested on 1 March 2017 for ‘helping and harboring an illegal organization.’ Muzaffer Sari and Abdi Aykut were detained during the military operation following the curfew declared in the villages of Nusaybin. Aykut subjected torture in custody and was taken to hospital because of the torture.
11 persons who were detained on 15 February 2017 in Manisa were taken to court on 1 March 2017. 10 persons were arrested. Names of the persons who were detained are as follows: HDP Co-Chiar for Turgutlu district Sulhaddin Dağlı, Mehmet G, Mehmet D, Evren A, Berfin Ç, Berivan A, Celal A, Mehmet G, Mehmet Ali C. and Sabri Y.
9 persons were detained on 14 February 2017 in Antalya for their social media shares. They were taken to court on 1 March 2017 and 6 of them were arrested for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization.’
A child named B.I. and a person named Metin Aksu, who were detained in Adana, were arrested on 1 March 2017 for ‘being a member of an illegal organization.’
(03/024) ByLock List…
According to the news appeared in press on 1 March 2017, MIT prepared a list which contains names of the persons who uses ByLock. 112,000 persons are, reportedly, on the list. The list was delivered to Ankara Head Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Head Public Prosecutor’s Office sent the list to Department of Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime.
(03/025) Detentions and Arrests in Connection with the Coup d’État Attempt…
Arrest warrants were issued for 34 teachers on 1 March 2017 in Balikesir. 29 of them are detained.
3 lawyers who were detained on 25 February 2017 in Adiyaman were arrested.
7 persons, who were detained in Antalya for using ByLock, were taken to court on 1 March 2017. 6 of them were arrested.
25 former police officials, who were detained in an Erzincan centered police operation for using ByLock, were taken to court on 1 March 2017. 18 of them were arrested.
43 persons, who were detained on 17 February 2017 in a Konya centred police operation about the former employees of Mevlana University, were taken to court on 1 March 2017. 18 of them were arrested.
11 persons were detained on 1 March 2017 in Bursa.
5 teacher of Feza Collage were detained on 1 March 2017 in Samsun for using Bylock.
(03/026) HDP MP on Trial…
Diyarbakir Head Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against HDP Diyarbakir MP Leyla Zana. The indictment wants the defendant to be sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for ‘being a member of illegal organization’, ‘praising crime and criminal’, ‘participating an illegal meeting and march without arms.’ The indictment was accepted on 1 March 2017.
(03/027) Ayse Teacher Case…
Bakirkoy Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued on 1 March 2017 the case against teacher Ayse Celik. The indictment wants the defendant to be sentenced for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’ by saying “don’t let the children die” on a TV program. Besides Celik, 38 other persons, including the editorial director of the program, and those who turned in themselves, are also being tried in this case. After the defenses, the prosecutor presented his final opinion and wanted the defendant Celik to be sentenced for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization.’ Prosecutor wanted the other defendants to be acquitted. Court adjourned the hearing to 24 April 2017.
(03/028) Hasan Cemal on Trial…
Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 24 continued on 1 March 2017 the case against journalist and writer Hasan Cemal. The indictment wants the defendant to be sentenced for ’insulting the Head of State’ in his article titled “A Scarp Dictator.” The courted sentenced Cemal to 11 months and 20 days imprisonment and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

Sırnak Heavy Penal Court No 2 started on 1 March 2017 the case against Aysel Isık, the reporter of JINHA which was closed down by a Decree with the Force of Law. The indictment wants the defendant to be sentenced for ‘being member of illegal organization’ on the basis of her social media shares and the news she had covered. Isık participated the hearing via SEGBİS from Urfa T Type Prison. After the defenses, court released Isık to be tried without remand and adjourned the hearing.
(03/030) Ekkrem Kaceroglu Case…
Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 8 continued the case against 4 persons. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for lynching Ekrem Kaceroglu during 6-8 October 2014 Kobane protests. The defendants did not participate the hearing.
In the hearing Arif Demirkaya testified as a witness. Court decided to wait for the technical expert report, to listen to the daughter of Demirkaya as a witness in the next hearing and adjourned the hearing to 5 July 2017.
(03/031) Hasan Ferit Gedik Case…
Anadolu Court Hose Heavy Penal Court No 10 continued the case against 35 persons on 1 March 2017. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for killing Hasan Ferit Gedik on 30 September 2013. The prosecutor presented his final opinion. In his opinion he stated that there was an organization which was founded to commit crime, its leader was Zafer Turhan and there were 24 member of this organization. The prosecutor wanted Turhan to be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment and the other 24 defendants to be sentenced for 4 years and 9 months imprisonment. The prosecutor wanted 10 defendants to be acquitted. About the killing of Hasan Ferit Gedik, the prosecutor wanted 10 defendants to be sentenced to life sentence. Court adjourned the hearing to 10 May 2017.
(03/032) Lawyer on Trial…
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 18 continued on 1 March 2017 the case against 22 lawyers. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for ‘being a member of an illegal organization.’ After the defenses the court adjourned the hearing to 7 June 2017.
Lawyers Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Taylan Tanay, Barkın Timtik, Ebru Timtik, Günay Dağ, Oya Aslan, Özgür Yılmaz, Güray Dağ, Gülvin Aydın, Efkan Bolaç, Serhan Arıkanoğlu, Zeki Rüzgâr, Mümin Özgür Gider, Metin Narin, Sevgi Sönmez, Alper Tunga Saral, Rahim Yılmaz, Selda Yılmaz are being tried in this case without remand.
(03/033) Group Yorum Case…
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 started the case against members of Group Yorum and employees of Idil Culture Centre. The indictment wants the defendants to be sentenced for ‘helping an illegal organization knowingly and willingly without being a member.’ After the defenses, the court released 7 Group Yorum members to be tried without a remand and adjourned the hearing to 13 June.
(03/034) A Case against a Leaflet of a Political Party…
Penal Department No 9 of the Supreme Court of Appeals reversed the judgment about the leaflet of TKP titled “Davutoglu should resign, we do not want a liar minister.’ In his decision it was stated that the expressions in the leaflet are considered within the borders of freedom of expression.
(03/035) Barbaros Sansal Case…
Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 5 released Barbaros Sansal to be tried without remand on 1 March 2017. Court also put a ban on leaving the country for Sansal.
Because of his social media shares, Sansal was deported from Turkish section of Cyprus and when he landed Istanbul he was beaten by a group of people waiting for him at the airport. He was arrested on 4 January 2017.
(03/036) Trustee Appointed to Municipality…
On 1 March 2017, Ministry of Interior appointed Idris Koc, sub-governor of Savur, as a trustee to Savur District Municipality in Mardin province.
Agrı Co-Mayor Sirri Sakik was dismissed from office on 1 March 2017 by Ministry of Interior. Agri Governor Musa Isın was appointed as a trustee to Agri Provincial Municipality.
The total number of trustees appointed to municipalities reached 84.
(03/037) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…
10 dead bodies of PKK militants (6 of them are women), which were, reportedly, killed during the military operations in Bitlis, were brought to Van Bölge Eğitim Hospital. The identities of the dead bodies were not yet clarified.
A village guard named M.I. was attacked on 1 March 2017 in Midyat district of Mardin at the gate of his house. I. was not injured severely and was taken to hospital.
(03/038) Constitutional Referendum…
According to the news appeared in press, a group calling them the “Grey Wolves of Hacettepe” attacked on 1 March 2017 in Beytepe Campus of Hacettepe University a group of students who were campaign for ‘No.’ They, reportedly, threatened the students by saying “We will cut your throats.” No action was done about this incident. The students leave the campus by mass transportation vehicles.
