(06/019) May 14/28 2023 General Elections

It is learned that a 14-year-old child (Emirhan Gelgir) who was injured by the fire opened by those who celebrate the election results in Eyyübiye district of Urfa, died in hospital on June 1, 2023.

(06/020) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 1, 2023 that, the prisoners in Kırıkkale F Type Prison were not allowed in outdoor area some days, were prevented from social, cultural and communication rights, their letters were not sent and they were not given hot water regularly.

(06/021) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 2, 2023 that, an ill prisoner named Muhlise Karagüzel in Izmir Menemen R Type Prison was not taken to the infirmary for a month.

(06/022) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on June 1, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(06/023) Police Intervention to Commemoration in Ankara…

The police intervened in the commemoration held on June 1, 2023 at Güvenpark in Çankaya district of Ankara for Ethem Sarısülük who died after being shot at the head by the police during Gezi Park protests in 2013, and detained 28 people by using physical violence. The names of detained people learned so far are: Çağla Yeşim Çakır, Songül Doğan, Mustafa Feroğlu, Enes Uğur, Zarife Çamalan, Umut Korkutan, Devin Can Atakan, Tuğulka Köseoğlu, Ilgaz Kekeç, Melih Yıldız, Murat Can Çoban, Hüseyin Gökoğlu, Ümit Can Akbulut and Dilara.

(06/024) Police Intervention to Protest in Izmir…

The police used tear gas and physical violence to intervene in the press declaration in front of the Izmir Bar Association regarding the postponement of the 2nd Aegean Pride Picnic, which will be held on June 2, 2023, on the Ege University campus as part of the LGBTI+ Pride Week events, after being targeted and threatened by phobic groups. It is learned that LGBTI+’s and lawyers were subjected to physical violence during the intervention, that nobody was detained, and that the press declaration was made as a result of the meetings held by the Izmir Bar Association. Upon the threats against the picnic, the Police Department and the Private Security Units stated that they would not be able to ensure the safety of the students, and the picnic was then postponed.

(06/025) Police Intervention to Protest in Düzce…

The police intervened in the press declaration of workers who were sacked for being union members in Düzce and detained 6 people on June 1, 2023. Detained people were released on June 2, 2023.

(06/026) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 70 people who were detained by the police intervening in the Pride March held at Boğaziçi University on May 20, 2022 is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 58 on May 30 and June 1, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 70 people on the charges of ‘resisting to the police’ and ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. It is learned that the defendants who made their defence declarations at the trial, told the torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to. A person named İ. S. Z. stated the following: “I was pushed into the police circle, I was surrounded by the mocking gazes of the officers. One officer choked me and did not care although I have said it hurts and said ‘I will kill you’”. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to November 2, 2023.

(06/027) Prisoner on Trial in Kocaeli…

The trial of the case against Şadiye Manap, who was released from Kocaeli Gebze Women’s Prison on December 1, 2022 after 30 years of imprisonment, but was detained and arrested before being released, through another investigation, is held at Kocaeli Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on June 1, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Şadiye Manap on the charge of ‘establishing and leading an illegal organisation’. Şadiye Manap attended the trial and made her defence. The court decided to continue detention of Şadiye Manap and adjourned the trial to June 21, 2023.
