(06/015) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 1, 2022 that, 4 people who were detained by the police intervening the protests in Istanbul on May 31, 2022 for the 9th anniversary of Gezi Park protests, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment at the Provincial Security Directorate.

Their lawyers who went to the Provincial Security Directorate to see their clients stated the following to the press: “4 people were taken out of the detention room taken to a separate room. We heard them chanting “Human dignity will overcome torture” and screaming. They did not open the door even though we gathered on the door and knocked it with punches. The sound of torture continued to come from inside, the torturer officers did not even open the door to their superiors who came to the door. When we entered, the clothes of our clients were torn apart and there were marks of torture on many parts of their bodies.”

It is learned from the news coverage of June 1, 2022 that, in Erzurum H Type and Trabzon Beşikdüzü T Type prisons, the broadcast of Meclis TV channel was banned by the prison administrations.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 1, 2022 that, prisoners in Giresun Espiye L Type Prison were not given the newspapers Yeni Yaşam, Birgün and Evrensel.

(06/017) Police Interventions to Gezi Protests in Istanbul and Ankara…

The police intervened the commemoration event for the 9th anniversary of Gezi Park protests, held in Ankara on June 1, 2022 and detained 46 people by using physical violence. Detained people are released on June 2, 2022.

170 people who were detained in police interventions in protests in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on May 31, 2022, are released on June 1, 2022 provided that 4 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 1, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on June 1, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(06/020) Police Intervention to a Protest in Şırnak…

5 people (HDP central district co-chair Kamuran Demir, HDP Uludere district co-chair Zilan Yaman, HDP Kumçatı town co-chair Zozan Deniz, HDP district executive Tuncay İnal and Dursun Çakır) who were detained by the police intervening the press declaration in Şırnak on May 31, 2022, about the Kobanê Case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) members and executives, are released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on June 1, 2022.

(05/021) Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor on Trial…

The trial of the case against Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, on the grounds of insulting members of the Supreme Election Committee, after cancellation of election results in Istanbul on March 31, 2019, is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on June 1, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence of 1 year 3 months and 15 days up to 4 years and 1 month for Ekrem İmamoğlu on the charge of ‘successive insult against public officers working as a board’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 21, 2022.

(05/022) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

On September 15, 2020, Penal Department No 16 of the Court of Cassation has approved the verdict of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 for 17 lawyers, all members of Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) and Peoples’ Law Office (HHB); and reversed the verdicts against 2 lawyers (ÇHD chair Selçuk Kozağaçlı and HHB member Barkın Timtik). The court has ruled consolidation of the case against 2 lawyers with another case on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 18. The retrial of the case is held on June 1, 2022.

After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of 3 lawyers (Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Barkın Timtik and Oya Aslan) and adjourned the trial to September 7, 2022.

Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 has sentenced Ayşegül Çağatay, Yağmur Ereren, Didem Baydar Ünsal, Yaprak Türkmen to 3 years and 9 months each and Ahmet Mandacı and Zehra Özdemir to 3 years 1 month and 15 days each, on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The local court has separated the cases against Oya Aslan and Günay Dağ; and sentenced Özgür Yılmaz and Ebru Timtik to 13 years and 6 months each; Behiç Aşçı and Şükriye Erden to 12 years each; Engin Gökoğlu, Aytaç Ünsal and Süleyman Gökten to 10 years and 6 months each; Aycan Çiçek and Naciye Demir to 9 years each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The Court of Cassation has approved the local court’s verdicts except for 3 lawyers (Barkın Timtik, Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Ezgi Çakır).

Lawyers from the ÇHD and HHB were detained on November 8, 2017 and were arrested on November 13, 2017. The court has released 17 lawyers on September 14, 2018 however, 6 of them (Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Ahmet Mandacı, Aytaç Ünsal, Aycan Çiçek, Engin Gökoğlu and Behiç Aşçı) were arrested again upon prosecutor’s appeal on September 16 and 17, 2018. Oya Aslan was arrested on December 27, 2019.

(06/023) The Case for Closure of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform Association…

The trial of the closure case against the We Will Stop Femicide Platform Association is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 13 on June 1, 2022. The court rejected intervention demands of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and Istanbul, Antep, Ankara, Eskişehir, Izmir, Kocaeli, Kırklareli, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır and Tekirdağ bar associations. The court decided to request all investigation and prosecution files against the association executives and adjourned the trial to October 5, 2022.

(06/024) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The retrial of the case against journalist Uğur Dündar, on the grounds of insulting Binali Yıldırım, the Minister of Transport back then, is held on June 1, 2022. The court sentenced Uğur Dündar to 11 months and 20 days and converted it to a penalty fine of 10,500 Turkish Liras. The Court of Cassation has overturned the verdict of Istanbul Küçükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 2.

(06/025) Suruç Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against Deniz Büyükçelebi and İlhami Bali, the fugitive defendants of the case on the bombing attack which killed 33 people in Suruç district of Urfa on July 20, 2015, is held at Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 5 on June 1, 2022.

The court rejected the intervention demands of political parties and organisations and adjourned the trial to December 5, 2022.

(06/026) EHCR Decision on Amnesty International Honorary Chair…

The European Court of Human Rights has concluded on the individual application of the Amnesty International’s honorary chair Taner Kılıç on May 31, 2022. The court has ruled that Taner Kılıç’s rights to liberty and safety and freedom of expression were violated by his arrest in 2017 and Turkey is ordered to pay 8,500 euros in respect of pecuniary damage, 16,000 euros in respect of non-pecuniary damage and 10,000 in respect of costs and expenses.

The Ministry of Health announced that the data of the Covid-19 pandemic will be shared weekly as of June 1, 2022.
