(07/018) Racist Attacks Against Syrian Refugees/Asylum Seekers in Adana, Antalya, Antep, Bursa, Hatay and Konya…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that a group of people shouting racist slogans set fire to vehicles of Syrian refugees/asylum seekers in Antep on July 2, 2024; and another group marched with sticks in their hands shouting racist slogans in neighborhoods where Syrian refugees/asylum seekers live. It is also claimed in the news reports that 1 Syrian refugee/asylum seeker was wounded due to a knife attack.
On the same date, 1 Syrian refugee/asylum seeker was allegedly subjected to physical violence by a racist group in Konya.
On the same date, a racist group allegedly caused material damage to businesses belonging to Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers in the Reyhanlı district of Hatay.
On the same date, a racist group reportedly marched in Hatay’s Antakya district, chanting discriminatory slogans such as ‘I don’t want refugees in my country’.
It is learned that on the same date, a racist group marched in the Kırıkhan district of Hatay chanting anti-refugee slogans, another group set fire to a workplace belonging to Syrian asylum seekers/refugees in the Cumhuriyet quarter, and 2 other workplaces were damaged due to the attack of the same group. It is reported that 8 people were detained in the police intervention against the racist attacks and the group dispersed after police warnings.
It is learned that a group gathered in the Akçakale district of Urfa on the same date and marched shouting racist slogans against Syrian refugees/asylum seekers.
It is learned that a group gathered in the Sultanbeyli district of Istanbul on the same date and marched shouting racist slogans against Syrian refugees/asylum seekers.
It is learned that a group gathered in the Serik district of Antalya on the same date and marched shouting racist slogans, set fire to some vehicles belonging to Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers, and attacked Syrian refugees/asylum seekers’ workplaces with stones. It is also reported in the news that the group prevented the fire brigade and medical teams from intervening in the fire caused by the attacks.
It is learned that on the same date in the Seyhan district of Adana, a group on motorcycles made a convoy and shouted racist and discriminatory slogans such as ‘We don’t want Syrians’. It is also reported in the news that Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers did not open their workplaces due to racist attacks.
The Ministry of Interior announced on its social media account that 474 people were detained across Turkey in connection with the racist attacks.

It is learned that the appeal made on July 2, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

The trial of the case against Semra Güzel, former Diyarbakır MP of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who was detained on September 2, 2022, after her immunity was lifted and was arrested by the court on September 3, 2022, continued on July 1, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The court decided to continue the detention of Semra Güzel and adjourned the trial to September 11, 2024.

On July 1, 2024, the first hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Onur Öncü due to his social media posts about alleged irregularities in the elections held on March 14, 2023, started at Istanbul Küçükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 26. Announcing its verdict at the first hearing, the court acquitted Onur Öncü on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’.

The final trial of the lawsuit filed against Doğan Ergün, Editor-in-Chief of İleri Haber, and İzel Sezer, News Director, on the grounds of the news article titled “Million tender game in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry” published on October 25, 2021, with a claim of 20 thousand TL compensation, was held at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No 20 on July 1, 2024. The court decided to dismiss the lawsuit.

On July 1, 2024, Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 held the final hearing of the retrial of the case against 26 people including 10 arrestees in connection with the suicide bomb attack of ISIS on the Peace Rally in Ankara on October 10, 2015, in which 103 people lost their lives. The court sentenced 10 arrested defendants to 100 times aggravated life imprisonment each for ‘intentional killing’, 1 time aggravated life imprisonment each for ‘attempting to overthrow the constitutional order’, 379 times 18 years imprisonment each for ‘attempted intentional killing’ and acquitted Erman Ekici for ‘committing crimes against humanity’ on the grounds that the elements of the crime did not exist. The court also decided to continue the arrest warrant for 16 fugitive defendants and to separate the case against them.

On June 27, 2024, it is learned from the news coverage of June 27, 2024 that, a total of 3 content on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, https://www.istiklal.com.tr and https://onedio.com related to the cyber-attack on social media channels of A Haber, Takvim and Sabah newspapers were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 6 on June 26, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.
It is learned from the news coverage of June 28, 2024, that 2 content on https://www.birgun.net and https://haber.sol.org.tr/anasayfa related to tenders of Sancaktepe Municipality of AKP in the previous term, were banned from access by Ankara Haymana Criminal Peace Judgeship on June 27, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.
It is learned from the news coverage of June 29, 2024, that 2100 news articles and social media posts mentioning Prof. Dr. Bedri Gencer’s name were banned from access by Sakarya Akyazı Criminal Peace Judgeship’s decision dated June 28, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and that the content was ordered to be deleted.
