(07/014) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned that Dilbent Türker and All Automotive and Metal Workers’ Union (TOMİS) representative Onur Eyidoğan, who have been detained on June 30, 2021, were forced to strip search under custody. 2 people have chained themselves to the gates of Unkapanı Social Security Institution to protest being dismissed from their jobs because of union membership, in Fatih district of Istanbul on June 30, 2021.

(07/015) Person Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2021 that, a person named Barış Çetin, was forcibly taken into a car by undercover police officers, on the grounds that he was not wearing a face mask when he left district office of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Esenyurt district of Istanbul on June 24, 2021; and that he was subjected to torture and ill-treatment in the car. It is learned that an investigation was launched against Barış Çetin on the grounds of insulting the police for he said “Who are you? Are you thugs kidnapping persons?” and that he was forced to be a police informant at Kıraç Police Station.

Barış Çetin stated the following: “As soon as I left the office, a group of undercover police officers shouted ‘Come here’, and a group of police officers were waiting ahead (…) They tried to detain me by using force, pushing and dragging me before everyone’s eyes (…) Then they said, ‘come here, we will impose a fine on you for not wearing a mask’ as I was resisting. I really did not have my face masks, I have forgotten it inside the office (…) But they forced me into a blue car, looked like Toros brand cars (…) So I thought that they would not be police officers, and asked ‘Who are you? Are you thugs kidnapping persons?’. They beat me for asking this, and launched an investigation for insulting the police. (…) I was taken to Kıraç Police Station, they wrote a report and made me sign it. And then they told me that, there were two people waiting for me and I must meet them. They took me into a room where these two people came later, they said they would like to ask a few questions. I said that what they do is illegal and I would never speak without my lawyer. They responded ‘We will speak and you will listen’. They told me that they were from the National Intelligence Service when I asked them who they were. They gave some names and asked if I knew them, I said I did not. Then they said they would like to be brothers with me, and drink a cup of tea outside together.”

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2021 that, the wards in Izmir Ödemiş T Type Prison are over capacity and some prisoners have to sleep on the floor.

(07/017) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on July 1, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(07/018) Police Intervention to Protests in Izmir and Istanbul…

The police used pepper gas and shields to intervene the groups gathering in front of Turkan Saylan Cultural Center in Izmir, to protest Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention on July 1, 2021. The police used pepper gas once again to intervene the groups marching on side streets. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(07/019) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial case against 22 people, on the charge of ‘resisting the police’, during the police raid to Gündem newspaper on August 16, 2016, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on July 1, 2021. The court adjourned the trial to November 23, 2021.

(07/020) ESP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) deputy co-chair Beycan Taşkıran is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on July 1, 2021. Beycan Taşkıran joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court released Beycan Taşkıran and adjourned the trial to November 18, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2021 that, the Ministry of Justice permitted the investigation against Izmir Bar Association chair and board members, for their declaration on April 25, 2021, about expressions of the head of the Presidency of Religious Affairs which discriminate against LGBTI.

(07/022) Ban of Event in Istanbul…

It is learned that video shooting of Grup Yorum music band’s online concert is banned by Beyoğlu Sub-Governorate on July 1, 2021.

(07/023) Ban of Events in Van…

Van Governorate made a declaration on July 1, 2021 and announced that, all open-door meetings and demonstrations are banned for 15 days as of July 3, 2021. All events are banned in Van for 1699 days since November 21, 2016.

(07/024) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the news reports about social media posts sharing the photo of fugitive businessperson Sezgin Baran Korkmaz dining with a member of the Court of Cassation, published on https://www.haber.sol.org.tr, https://www.aykiri.com.tr, https://halktv.com.tr are banned on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 7 on July 1, 2021.

(07/025) Proceedings Against Parliamentary Members…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 1, 2021 that, 21 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 20 parliamentary members are submitted to Grand National Assembly.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are:

The final trial of the case against Fatih Saraçoğlu is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 21 on July 1, 2021. The court sentenced the defendant to 8 years and 9 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(07/028) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 42 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 462 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on July 1, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 5,288.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 49,774 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,430,940 as of July 1, 2021.
