(02/022) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on February 2, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

(02/023) Intervention Against a Rainbow Flag in Ankara…

According to the news coverage of February 1, 2024, 42 people who were detained by torture and ill-treatment during the Pride March in Ankara on July 5, 2022, were charged with ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’, ‘insult’ and ‘simple injury’. It is learned that on January 31, 2024, after the trial of the case at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 52, plainclothes people claiming themselves as police officers intervened against the lawyers taking photos with rainbow flag and recorded the video footage of people raising the rainbow flag without showing their police IDs.

(02/024) Journalist Detained in Ankara…

Journalist Enver Aysever announced on his social media account that he was detained on February 2, 2024, at Ankara Esenboğa Airport and released by the court. The reason for the detention was not revealed.

(02/025) People Detained and Arrested through an Izmır-based Investigation…

According to the news coverage of 1 January 2024, 8 people (H.Ö., H.S., H.K., Y.A., M.K., Aytaç Asam, Mehmet Ali Kılıç and Kadir İmre) who were detained on 30 January 2024 in house raids and operations in four provinces within the scope of an investigation conducted by Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, were brought to Izmir on 1 January 2024, were referred to Izmir Criminal Peace Judgeship No 7 on January 1, 2024. It is learned that 3 people (Aytaç Asam, Mehmet Ali Kılıç and Kadir İmre) were arrested and 3 people (Aytaç Asam, Mehmet Ali Kılıç and Kadir İmre) were released on judicial control condition.

(02/026) The Case of Metin Lokumcu…

On February 1, 2024, Trabzon Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued to hear the case against 13 police officers including Artvin Provincial Security Director and Hopa District Security Director in connection with the death of Metin Lokumcu due to excessive and disproportionate use of tear gas during the police intervention against a press declaration in Hopa district of Artvin on May 31, 2011. The defendant police officers did not attend the hearing. The court rejected the discovery requests of Lokumcu family lawyers and adjourned the hearing to June 11, 2024.

(02/027) Artist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the lawsuit filed against actor İlyas Salman due to ‘insulting the President’ through his words “I do not consider Erdoğan worthy of that seat” in an interview, continued on February 1, 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. İlyas Salman’s lawyer requested recusal of the judge. The court decided to send the file to the heavy penal court on duty to examine the request for recusal of the judge and adjourned the hearing to a later date.

(02/028) Diyarbakır Bar Association Executives on Trial…

The final trial of the case against former Diyarbakır Bar Association chair Cihan Aydın and executive board members Muhlis Oğurgül, Ahmet Dağ, Erhan Aytekin, Fırat Üger, Gazal Bayram Koluman, Mehmet Akbaş, Serdar Çelebi, Tevfik Karahan, Ömer Şeran and Özgür Yılmaz Biçen, for their declaration on Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2020, was held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on February 2, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for former bar association executives on the charge of “publicly degrading the Turkish Nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the state” under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code. The court acquitted all bar association executives.

(02/029) The Case of Gezi/Çarşı…

The retrial of the case against 35 people, including members of Beşiktaş fan group ‘Çarşı’, continued on February 1, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 after the acquittal verdict was overturned. The court adjourned the hearing to May 6, 2024.

(02/030) Banned Events and Demonstrations…

Hakkari Governorate announced on February 1, 2024, that all events such as demonstrations, sit-ins, protests, demonstrations, press statements, etc. are banned for 4 days between February 1, 2024 and February 4, 2024.

Ağrı Governorate made a declaration on February 1, 2024, and announced that demonstrations, outdoor and indoor meetings, press declarations, sit-ins and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and all kinds of protest activities are banned for 4 days between February 2, 2024 and February 5, 2024.
