(01/015) Detained Political Party Executive in Istanbul…

The Social Freedom Party (TÖP) Spokespersons Board member Perihan Koca is detained on the grounds of social media posts, following the trial of the case against her at Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on February 1, 2023. Perihan Koca is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/016) Detained Journalist in Istanbul…

Journalist Metin Uca is detained on the grounds of a warrant, at Istanbul Airport on February 2, 2023. It is learned that the reason for detention is, an anonymous complaint against him over the expressions he quoted from Ottoman Emperor Mehmet II in a play he staged. Metin Uca is released after statement procedures on the same day.

Fashion designer Barbaros Şansal is detained at Istanbul Airport on February 2, 2023, on the grounds of a search warrant through the investigation for “publicly insulting the judicial organs of the state, the military or the police force”. Barbaros Şansal is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/018) Detained Person in Hakkari…

On February 1, 2023, 1 person named Birhat Gürdal is detained in a house raid in Yüksekova district of Hakkari. The reason for detention is unknown. Birhat Gürdal is released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 2, 2023.

(02/019) Journalist and Other People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 34 people including journalist Sadiye Eser is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 6 on February 1, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for defendants on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 1, 2023.

(02/020) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

After the local court’s verdict was overturned by Diyarbakır Regional Court, the retrial of the case against Dicle News Agency reporter Ramazan Akoğul is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on February 2, 2023. The court acquitted Ramazan Akoğul.

(02/021) Journalist and Other People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against people, including journalist Şehriban Alkış, who were detained by the police intervening in the protest in front of the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Family, Labour and Social Services regarding Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 23 on February 2, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 16, 2023.

The trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former Diyarbakır MP Çağlar Demirel on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No. 5 on February 2, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 22, 2023.

The final trial of the case against CHP Party Assembly member Eren Erdem, for the social media post reading “HUNGER = RTE” is held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No. 63 on February 2, 2023. The court acquitted Eren Erdem. The prosecutor has declared legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence from 1 year to 4 years for Eren Erdem on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ and requested political ban.

(02/024) People on Trial for 1 May Events…

The trial of the case against 15 people, who were detained by the police intervening in the march to Taksim Square in Istanbul on May 1 Labour Day, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 29 on February 1, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 10, 2023.

The trial of the case against Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former provincial co-chairs Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on February 1, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Zeyyat Ceylan and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to June 8, 2023.

It is learned that the https://100suzler.org website, founded by journalists Can Dündar and Erk Acarer, is banned to access by the Information Technologies and Communication Authority on February 1, 2023.

It is learned that the https://www.kizilbayrak75.net website is banned to access by Maraş Penal Court of Peace No. 2 on January 11, 2023; https://www.alinteri7.org website is banned to access by Maraş Penal Court of Peace No. 2 on January 24, 2023; https://www.yenidemokrasi31.net website is banned to access by Adana Penal Court of Peace No. 8 on January 24, 2023 on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order”.
