(04/009) Refugees Who Lost Their Lives and Got Injured in Antep…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 30, 2024, that a fuel tanker was stopped at a resting facility in the Şehitkamil district of Antep and was carrying 52 refugees from Afghanistan. 2 of the 52 refugees were found dead and 7 of them were found injured. It is reported that injured refugees were taken to hospital for treatment and the driver of the vehicle was detained.

(04/010) Person Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Kocaeli…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 2, 2024, that D. I., who went to Darıca Central Police Station in Darıca district of Kocaeli on March 26, 2024 with the allegation of his wife being harassed by phone calls, was subjected to physical violence by the police officers in the police station after it was revealed that the person making the calls was a police officer; D. I., who recorded the physical violence with his phone, was threatened by the police officers and forced to delete the footage. It is learned that the police officers entered the doctor’s room before him in Darıca Farabi State Hospital and the medical report given to D. I. by the doctor did not document the torture and ill-treatment he was subjected to.

(04/011) Prisoner Who Went Missing After Being Released from Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024 that, the family of Ali Veli, a Syrian citizen prisoner in Erzincan L Type Prison, who was released on March 13, 2024 and was not heard from again, was threatened by anonymous persons who called the family and sent footage of Ali Veli being subjected to torture to the family.

Ali Veli was released from prison on 13 March 2024 to be taken to a removal center, but his family and relatives were not informed which removal center he would be taken to.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024, that Cem Dursun and Oktay Kelebek, who are kept in Izmir Buca High-Security Prison, have been on an indefinite hunger strike for 37 days, demanding to be transferred to another prison and release of ill prisoner Mehmet Güvel.

(04/013) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on April 2, 2024, by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

(04/014) March 31st Elections…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 31, 2024, that on March 31, 2024, a ballot box in Yeni Mahalle of Hilvan district of Urfa, where Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) was leading, was set on fire by people reported to be members of Justice and Development Party (AKP) and that DEM Party officials will file a criminal complaint.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024, that 3 people (Hilmi Akbulut, İ.Y., and Ş.A.) were wounded by bullets from a firearm during a quarrel about mukhtar elections in the Görentepe neighborhood of Nusaybin district of Mardin on March 31, 2024; and Hilmi Akbulut died in hospital. It is reported that unnamed people were detained in connection with the incident.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024, that 9 people were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against people celebrating the election results in Siirt. One person was injured when pepper spray was used on his face during the intervention and was taken to hospital. It is reported that the police opened fire in the air and threatened people around.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 2, 2024, that the decision of the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on March 29, 2024, upon the appeal of Ministry of Justice, annulled the decision on the restoration of rights of Abdullah Zeydan, DEM Party’s co-mayor for Van Metropolitan Municipality in March 31, 2024 elections, and Van Provincial Electoral Board decided to give the municipal co-chair to the party which ranked 2nd in the elections. The police intervened against the people gathering in front of DEM Party Provincial Organization building against the decision, using pressurized water and tear gas.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 2, 2024, that during police intervention against people celebrating election results in Muş, 6 people were detained by torture and ill-treatment and 3 people were wounded during the intervention. It is reported that detainees were taken to Muş Provincial Security Directorate for statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 2, 2024, that Bülent Kara, who was elected as mayor from the İYİ Party in the Tirebolu district of Giresun, was subjected to an armed attack by a person on April 1, 2024. It is reported that 1 person is detained in relation to the attack.

(04/015) Person Detained Due to Social Media Posts in Muğla…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024, that a person named İ. D. was detained in Muğla on the grounds of insulting the police force in a social media post.

(04/016) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against İnan Kızılkaya, Managing Editor of Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree on May 31, 2016, and İhsan Çaralan, who participated in the “Editor-in-Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem and was Editor-in-Chief for 1 day, continued on March 29, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands the journalists be sentenced for ‘insulting the President’. The prosecutor declared his final opinion on the case and demanded that the journalists be sentenced for the charges against them. The court adjourned the hearing to September 13, 2024.

(04/017) Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against lawyer Ruşen Seydaoğlu, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, continued on April 1, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8, after the 6 years and 3 months imprisonment sentence given on March 1, 2022, was overturned by Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals. The court acquitted the lawyer.

(04/018) Person Under Investigation in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 1, 2024, that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office decided ‘no prosecution’ in the investigation initiated against Artı TV News Anchor Şükran Ekinci on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ for sharing a news report on social media about a landslide in a gold mine in İliç district of Erzincan on February 13, 2024.
