(10/179) Asylum Seekers Subjected to Physical Violence at the Border…

Regarding 92 asylum seekers who were found without clothes and were allegedly subjected to physical violence on the Turkey-Greece border on October 14, 2022 by the Greek police and the European Border Protection Agency (Frontex), the Press Spokesperson of the Greek Ministry of Immigration and Asylum made a statement on October 19, 2022 and said that the investigation will be carried out by the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu denied the allegations that the asylum seekers were pushed from the Turkish border without clothes and by using physical violence, while the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called for a full investigation into the incident.

On October 19, 2022, 4 members (Muhittin Üzümcüoğlu, Abdullah İşleyen, Şemsettin Esen and Mürsel Sayıner) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) are detained in house raids in Erciş district of Van. The reason for detention is unknown.

5 people (Ercan Sucu, Abuzer Yaman, Güzel Demirci, Mahmut Yıldız and Hasan Sel) who were detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ in Adıyaman on October 17, 2022, are released after statement procedures on October 18, 2022.

(10/182) Özgür Gündem Case…

On November 3, 2020, the Penal Department No. 3 of Istanbul Regional Court has reversed the verdict of acquittal of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey chair and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) chair Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, in the “Özgür Gündem case”. On July 17, 2019, Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 have acquitted Erol Önderoğlu, Ahmet Nesin and Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı who were on trial for participating in “Editors in Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree. The retrial of the case is held on October 19, 2022. The court decided to send the request for recusation to Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14 and adjourned the trial to February 1, 2023.

(10/183) Municipality Employee on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against Şafak Duran, a social worker in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 32 on October 19, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Şafak Duran on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. Şafak Duran attended the trial. After defence hearings the court decided to continue the detention of Şafak Duran and adjourned the trial to January 11, 2023. Şafak Duran was detained on April 27, 2022 and was arrested by the court on April 29, 2022.

(10/184) HDP Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against HDP Youth Assembly member Esengül Kılınç is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 4 on October 18, 2022. Esengül Kılınç joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to release Esengül Kılınç and adjourned the trial to November 29, 2022.

(10/185) Prisoners on Trial in Antep…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 19, 2022 that, the final trial of the case against 3 prisoners (Hayriye Neslihan Gözlügöl, Sevinç Selçuk and Zozan Cimo) in Antep L Type Prison, on the grounds of damaging the cameras in their wards was held at Antep Penal Court of First Instance No. 16 on October 3, 2022. The court sentenced Hayriye Neslihan Gözlügöl and Sevinç Selçuk to 1 year and 6 months each on the charge of ‘damaging public property’ and acquitted Zozan Cimo.

It is learned that the concert of Iranian musician Mohsen Namjoo in Istanbul on December 2, 2022 was cancelled on October 19, 2022.

(10/187) Administrative Fine for Television Channel…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 19, 2022 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued TELE 1 TV channel with a broadcasting ban for 3 days and administrative fine, on the grounds of ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility by discriminating against race, language, religion, gender, class, region and sect’ due to expressions of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP) Istanbul MP Sera Kadıgil in a programme.

It is learned that the news report about HDP Group Deputy Saruhan Oluç’s statements about Yeni Şafak and Sabah newspapers, published on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr website is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights, by Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of Peace No. 4 on October 17, 2022.

(10/189) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that the number of detained people through the investigation which was announced by the Ministry of Interior on October 18, 2022 raised to 626 on October 19, 2022. It was announced that detention warrants were issued for 704 people.
