It is learned that 4 people were injured in the explosion that took place on July 18, 2023 in the ammunition depot of the capsule factory of the Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation in Mamak district of Ankara. No official statement was made as to the cause of the explosion.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 18, 2023 that, an ill prisoner named Enes Bilgen in Samsun Bafra T Type Closed prison was not referred to hospitals on the grounds that he rejects mouth search.
It is learned from the news coverage of July 18, 2023 that, a prisoner named Aziz Yalçın with Crohn disease in Samsun Kavak S Type Closed Prison was not referred to hospital for the last 2 months.
It is learned from the news coverage of July 18, 2023 that, an ill prisoner named Yahya Güneş in Giresun Espiye L Type Prison was not referred to hospital for cancer treatment.
(07/151) Police Intervention to Leaflet Distribution in Istanbul…
35 of 46 people who were detained by the police intervening in the youth organisations’ members who were distributing leaflets in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on July 17, 2023 to call for the commemoration for those who lost their lives in the bombing attack in Suruç district of Urfa on July 20, 2015; were released after statement procedures on the same day. 6 of 9 people [Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF) central executive board member Gamze Toprak, Berkan Deveci, Ayşe Beliz İnce, Ali Taha Sarıbıyık, Ebru Gürsoy and Merve Yeşilyurt] who were referred to the court on July 18, 2023 were arrested on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ and ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’ while 3 of them (Kevser Turan, Gizem Özdemir and Seçil Murtazaoğlu) were released on judicial control conditions. 2 children among the detainees were released by the court on July 18, 2023 on judicial control condition of “planting trees”.

The police intervened in the group of Iyi Party members and Iyi Party Bursa deputies Hasan Toktaş and Selçuk Türkoğlu, as they wanted to leave empty gas cans in front of the Provincial Directorate of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), after the press declaration held at Fomara Square in Bursa to protest the government’s economic policies and price hikes on July 18, 2023, by using physical violence. It is learned that nobody was detained and one person (Şaban Aksoy) was injured.

It is learned that 1 person (Gülşen Kandemir) was detained in a house raid on the grounds of ‘aiding and abetting an illegal organisation’ in Ereğli district of Konya on July 18, 2023.
(07/154) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…
The trial of the case against journalist Merdan Yanardağ, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in his articles in BirGün newspaper is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2 on July 18, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Merdan Yanardağ on the charge of ‘successively and publicly degrading the President’. The court adjourned the trial to November 14, 2023.
(07/155) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 19, 2023 that the Penal Department No. 23 of Istanbul Regional Court overturned the verdict of Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 35 regarding the case against 3 police officers (K. A., N. D. and Y. Ş.) on the grounds of committing violence to journalist Beyza Kural while she was reporting on an incident, and the retrial will be held on October 10, 2023.
Beyza Kural was subjected to physical violence of the police while reporting on a protest in Istanbul on November 6, 2015. The Constitutional Court decided on Beyza Kural’s individual appeal on February 18, 2021 and ruled that ban of treatment against human dignity, and freedom of expression and freedom of press were violated. The court has also ruled that an investigation should be carried on in order to end the results and 15,000 Turkish Liras should be paid to Beyza Kural as immaterial compensation.
On December 1, 2023, the local court sentenced the defendant police officers to a penalty fine of 6,000 Turkish Liras each on the charge of ‘violation of freedom of work and labour’ which will be paid in ten instalments.
(07/156) Correction Officers on Trial in Aydın…
The final trial of the case against 5 correction officers (Cem A., Mehmet E. D., Mustafa İ., Ömer G. T. and Taşkın G.) regarding death of a prisoner named Yılmaz Ekinci in Aydın E Type Prison on January 13, 2022, is held at Aydın Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on July 18, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for defendants on the charge of “misconduct”. The court acquitted all defendants on the grounds that there was no sufficient evidence and no criminal element. The prison administration has declared that Yılmaz Ekinci killed himself however Aydın Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation upon the torture and ill-treatment allegations.
(07/157) Dismissed Academician at Boğaziçi University…
Mehmet Naci İnci, the deputy rector of Boğaziçi University instead of Melih Bulu who was appointed by the President as the rector, ended duty of lecturer Can Candan on July 16, 2023, for the third time. Can Candan’s duty was terminated first on July 16, 2021, and he has returned to his post at the university on March 25, 2022 by the court’s verdict, and then he was dismissed once again on August 9, 2022, on the grounds of the disciplinary investigation opened against him and was back to his post following the court’s order on May 23, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 18, 2023 that the concert of Grup Yorum to be held on July 16, 2023 as part of the Evvel Temmuz Festival in Samandağ district of Hatay, was not allowed by the district governorate’s office on July 15, 2023.

It is learned that Ege University’s former rector Mustafa Cüneyt Hoşcoşkun who was detained in Izmir on July 4, 2023, was arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on July 18, 2023.
