It is learned that the appeal made on January 18, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

(01/160) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 19, 2024, that 21 people who were detained in Istanbul on January 16, 2024, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment at Provincial Security Directorate, and that Gönül Karaman and her father were subjected to physical violence of the police officers while they were detained in a house raid.

(01/161) Party Member and Executives on Trial in Çorlu…

On January 18, 2024, Çorlu Penal Court of First Instance No 2 held the final hearing of the case against the provincial executives of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Labour Party (EMEP) who were detained during a peaceful demonstration on May 15, 2015 in Tekirdağ, on the allegations of violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations. The court sentenced the party members and executives to 5 months imprisonment.

On January 18, 2024, the first trial of the case against Ali Yalçınkaya, co-chair of Avesta Language and Culture Research Association, who was arrested by the court on December 1, 2023 after being detained in a house raid on November 28, 2023, started to be held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 2 on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Ali Yalçınkaya and adjourned the trial to February 27, 2024.

On January 18, 2024, the first trial of the case against Ramazan Yavuz, executive of Ege Association for Assistance to Families of Prisoners and Detainees (EGE-TUHAYDER), who was arrested by the court on December 1, 2023, after being detained on November 28, 2023, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ started at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 2. The court released Ramazan Yavuz and adjourned the trial to February 29, 2024.

On July 11, 2023, the trial of the case against Jinnews reporter Rozerin Gültekin, who was detained in Bursa on June 12, 2022 while following news reports, continued at Bursa Penal Court of First Instance No 18. The indictment demands a sentence for Rozerin Gültekin on the grounds of ‘violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the hearing to March 21, 2024.

The trial of the case against Dicle Müftüoğlu, co-chair of Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) and editor of Mezopotamya Agency (MA), continued on January 18, 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. Dicle Müftüoğlu attended the hearing via SEGBİS from Ankara Sincan Prison. The court decided to continue the detention of Dicle Müftüoğlu and adjourned the trial to February 29, 2024. Dicle Müftüoğlu was arrested on May 3, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2024, that journalist Arat Barış was called to give his statement to Istanbul Çerkezköy District Gendarmerie Command through a secret investigation. Arat Barış made the following statement to the press “They said that they would investigate it this way and submit a file to the prosecutor’s office. As far as I understand, not only what I write but also what I do has been monitored step by step for a long time. When my lawyer asked to see the contents of the file, the officer in charge told us that the file was ‘confidential’ and therefore that would not be possible. They directed us to the courthouse to find out the contents of the file.”

The trial of the case against Furkan Karabay, editor of Gerçek Gündem, on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘slander’ based on a news report he made, continued on January 18, 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court acquitted Furkan Karabay on the charge of ‘insult’ and sentenced him to 1 year and 15 days on the charge of ‘slander’ and postponed the sentence.

The trial of the case against 11 journalists from Mezopotamya News Agency and JINNEWS on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ continued on January 18, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court decided to continue judicial control conditions on the journalists and adjourned the trial to April 25, 2024.

The trial of the case about the racist attack to Dedeoğulları family in Hasanköy neighbourhood of Meram district of Konya on July 30, 2021, was held at Konya Heavy Penal Court No 8 on January 18, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to April 19, 2024.

(01/170) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The final hearing of the case against Mansur Çelik, Editor-in-Chief of ANKA News Agency, on the charge of ‘targeting a public official involved in the fight against terrorism’ through a news report on Akın Gürlek, Deputy Minister of Justice, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22 on January 18, 2024. The court sentenced Mansur Çelik to 6 months imprisonment and suspended the sentence.

(01/171) Teacher Dismissed through a Decree Law…

On January 18, 2024, Ankara Administrative Court No. 19 rejected the appeal filed by teacher Aslı Akdemir, who was dismissed from her job on February 6, 2017 with a Decree Law, on the grounds that she was active in the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) and had attended a camp of the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP).

Metro Istanbul announced that Osmanbey metro station will be closed on January 19, 2024 between 14.30-17.30 pm, as per the decision of Istanbul Governorate.
