(01/143) Person Died in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2023 that, Ahmet Cengiz Karlı, an ill prisoner in Tokat Prison, lost his life in the shuttle as he was being taken back from the hospital on January 18, 2023.

The Karlı family’s lawyer stated the following to the press: “Our client Ahmet Cengiz Karlı was taken to hospital as he fell ill yesterday. He was kept in the hospital for about 3-4 hours and was told that he had pneumonia but still he was taken back to the prison. Then his health deteriorated at 02:30 in the morning and he was referred to Tokat State Hospital, and although he said ‘I am feeling really bad, send me to another hospital’, the doctors wanted to send him back to the prison. He died at around 4 a.m. as he in the shuttle back to Tokat Prison.”

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2023, a prisoner named Sinan Çelik in Urfa T Type Prison No. 1 was forced to be examined in handcuffs and in mouth search in prison infirmary.

(01/145) TJA Spokesperson on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, the Spokesperson of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on January 18, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Ayşe Gökkan on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to January 30, 2023.

(01/146) Journalists and Political Party Executives on Trial in Ağrı…

The final trial of the case against 6 people (journalists Aziz Oruç and Dicle Müftüoğlu, the Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] Doğubayazıt district co-chair Abdullah Ekelik, Turgay İlboğa and Yücel İlhan) is held at Ağrı Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on January 18, 2023. The court decided to release Aziz Oruç. The court sentenced Dicle Müftüoğlu, Muhammet İkram Müftüoğlu, Abdullah Ekelik, Turgay İlboğa and Yücel İlhan to 5 months each on the charge of “protecting an offender”, and deferred the announcement of the verdict for 4 defendants while suspending the verdict for Dicle Müftüoğlu.

Aziz Oruç and Abdullah Ekelik were detained on December 11, 2019, on Ağrı-Doğubayazıt roadway, while İkram Müftüoğlu was detained on the same day in a house raid. Abdullah Ekelik and İkram Müftüoğlu were arrested on December 13, 2019; Aziz Oruç was arrested on December 18, 2019. Abdullah Ekelek and İkram Müftüoğlu were released at the first trial held on July 21, 2020, and Aziz Oruç was released on November 9, 2020.

The trial of the case against Silvan Mücadele newspaper’s executive editor Ferhat Parlak, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11 on January 18, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to March 8, 2023.

(01/148) Journalist and Other People on trial in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2023 that, the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against 24 people including Jinnews reporter Öznur Değer, who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration held in Ankara on November 28, 2021; is accepted by Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 18 on January 5, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 24 people on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘participating in unlawful meetings and marches unarmed and not dispersing despite the warning’. The first trial will be held on May 8, 2023.

The first trial of the case against HDP Youth Assembly former member Hüsamettin Tanrıkulu is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 29 on January 18, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Hüsamettin Tanrıkulu on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to continue detention of Hüsamettin Tanrıkulu and adjourned the trial to March 15, 2023.

Hüsamettin Tanrıkulu was detained on September 2, 2022 and was arrested by the court on September 6, 2023.

(01/150) Association Executives on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 37 members and executives of the Libertarian Lawyers Association (ÖHD) and the Federation of Prisoners’ Families Legal Solidarity Associations (TUHAD-FED), which were closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14 on January 18, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to March 22, 2023.

(01/151) People on Trial in Adana…

The trial of the case against 17 people who were detained by the police intervening in the commemoration held in Adana on July 18, 2021 for those who lost their lives in the Suruç Massacre, is held at Adana Penal Court of First Instance No. 17 on January 18, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 8, 2023.

(01/152) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against police officer S. G., regarding injury of 2 people (Şeyhmus Yılmaz and Menice Yılmaz) who has been subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police using dogs during a police raid to their house, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on January 18, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of ‘intentional injury on account of a public officer misusing his influence’. The defendant police officer joined the trial via sound and vision system. The court adjourned the trial to March 6, 2023.

The trial of the case against police officer Murat A., on the grounds of hitting and breaking the back of lawyer Zeycan Balcı, during a press declaration on March 30, 2016 in front of Istanbul Court House, is held on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on January 18, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Murat A. on the charges of ‘injury’, ‘intentional injury that cause bone fracture’, ‘extensive use of force’. The court adjourned the trial to April 12, 2023.
