(01/167) Person Wounded by Police Fire in Istanbul…

On January 18, 2022, a person (M. G.) who has allegedly attacked the police with a knife at the entrance of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul, got wounded by the police fire.

Istanbul Governorate’s Office made the following declaration: “A person named M. G. attacked the security officer on duty in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Kağıthane district, at around 10.50 today. The person was verbally and physically warned by the police officers opening fire up into the air, but as he did not obey the warning he was shot at the leg and admitted to the hospital.”

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2022 that, Fikret Diyar Orhan, a prisoner in Van T Type Prison was subjected to physical violence of the correction officers.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 18, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

The police intervened the members of Campus Witches and Purple Solidarity, who wanted to march to the Grand National Assembly, to demand period products not to be charged, in Ankara on January 18, 2022, and detained 9 people by using physical violence. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 18, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on January 18, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

Birgün newspaper’s reporter Can Uğur is detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on January 18, 2022, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’. Can Uğur is released after statement procedures on the same day.

On January 18, 2022, 5 people are detained in house raids in Şirvan and Tilo districts of Siirt. The reason of detention is unknown.

(01/175) Students on Trial for Participating in a Protest in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 12 students of Boğaziçi University, who have been detained for carrying a “rainbow flag” in a protest against the new rector appointed by President, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24 on January 18, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 24, 2022.

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Şerif Çamçı, chair of the Sarmaşık Association for Sustainable Development and Struggle against Poverty which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 18, 2022. The court sentenced Mehmet Şerif Camcı to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2022 that, a person was imposed a penalty fine of 13,237 Turkish Liras, for hanging a banner at the Galata Bridge to protest the rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2022 that, Ayşe Beliz İnce, a student of Boğaziçi University was subjected to disciplinary proceedings on the grounds of throwing eggs in a protest against the rector appointed by the President, and that she was imposed a temporary debarment for a term as a result.

On January 18, 2022, 9 people are detained in Ankara.

(01/180) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 157 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 69,658 as of January 18, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 85,077 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 10,591,757 as of January 18, 2022.
