(10/258) Suspicious Death in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 20, 2024, that Serhat Temizer (22, m), a prisoner with epilepsy, who was kept in Erzurum Dumlu Prison No 2 and was released from the case on Hakkâri Heavy Penal Court No 1 on October 18, 2024, died under suspicious circumstances in Van T Type High-Security Prison. It is stated in the news reports that prison authorities informed Serhat Temizer’s family that ‘he suddenly collapsed and then died’, and that the prison administration stated that they could not inform the family because they had no information.

Hatip Temizer, father of Serhat Temizer, made the following statements to the press: “What happened to my son, who came out of the hearing intact, that he lost his life today? He was brought here yesterday, and today we were informed of his death. What happened during this time? What happened? How did he die? There is not a single piece of information on this. I was not given any information other than ‘Your son lost his life, I am sorry for your loss’ (…) The death of my son, who had no problems until now, seems very suspicious to us. When he was imprisoned in Van High-Security Prison, I used to visit him frequently. Since he was taken to Erzurum prison, I have not been able to visit him much because of the long distance. Despite his epilepsy, my son was put in a single cell by the prison administration in Erzurum. In the single cell, he was kept under 24/7 camera surveillance.
