(05/175) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Haydar Şenel) who was injured in an attack in Afrin area of Syria on May 13, 2022, died on May 19, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 18, 2022 that, 4 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Hakurk area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on May 16, 2022.

(05/176) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 19, 2022 that, the political prisoners in Aksaray T Type Prison, were not allowed to use their video call rights.

(05/177) Attack on CHP Member in Istanbul…

It is learned that a member of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) was attacked by a group alleged to be a member of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and was injured in the face during the event held as part of the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, on May 19, 2022, in Kadıköy district of Istanbul.

(05/178) Threatened Journalists…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 20, 2022, that journalist Seyhan Avşar is getting threats after her news reports titled “The shooter who shot a bullet for Çakıcı was caught with heroin: His statement has it all”, and that journalist Hale Gönültaş is getting threats after her news reports titled “The jihad video of the ISIS member woman with a knife was shot in the Nation’s Garden”.

(05/179) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the Pride March of LGBTI+ Research Club (BULGBTIA+) in Boğaziçi University campus on May 20, 2022, and detained at least 70 people by using physical violence. It is learned that at least 1 person is injured.

(05/180) Police Intervention to a Commemoration in Istanbul…

The police, intervened in the commemoration event held by the United Struggle Forces (BMG) in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on May 18, 2022 to commemorate İbrahim Kaypakkaya and others who lost their lives in May. The police intervention was grounded on the ban decision of Kadıköy Sub-Governorate’s Office and 25 people were detained by physical violence. Detained people are released on after statement procedures on May 19, 2022.

It was learned that journalists were also subjected to physical violence by the police and were prevented from recording.

(05/181) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration to support Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım, who are on hunger strike in prison and to demand release of ill prisoners, held at Galatasaray Square in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on May 19, 2022; and detained 2 people (Hüseyin Kütük and Feridun Osmanoğlu).

(05/182) Police Prevention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police prevented the press declaration which was to be held in front of Bakırköy Courthouse in Istanbul, on May 18, 2022, after the trial of the case against 16 people for participating in a protest about ill prisoners.

(05/183) Police Intervention to a Protest in Diyarbakır…

The police intervened the press declaration of Amed Labour and Democracy Platform, regarding financial, social and political issues of Turkey, held in Diyarbakır on May 18, 2022.

It is learned that the police also prevented journalists from recording and nobody was detained in the intervention.

(05/184) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 18 and 19, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/185) Detained People in Istanbul…

24 people including the Mezopotamya Cultural Center musician Halime Demirkapı have been detained through an Istanbul based investigation on May 12, 2022. 8 of them are arrested by the court on May 19, 2022; 14 people are released on judicial control conditions and 2 people are released on house confinement.

(05/186) Detained HDP Members in Diyarbakır…

On May 19, 2022, 12 people including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) executives and HDP Youth Assembly members, are detained in house raids in Diyarbakır.

Detained people are: Halide Türkoğlu, Çekdar Budak, Sevim Akdağ, Zeliha Kocaman, Emine Aksoy, Betül Ünsal, Metin Yılmaz, Beritan Yaşar, Hamza Ağırman, Esengül Kılıç, Nurullah Özğün and Mustafa Kurt.

(05/187) Detained People in Mardin…

3 people (Talip Balıkçı, Burhan Elmaz and Hikmet Altun) who were detained in house raids in Mardin on May 17, 2022, are released by the court on May 19, 2022.

(05/188) Detained People in Hakkari…

On May 17, 2022, 3 people were detained in house raids in Yüksekova district of Hakkari. 2 of them (Hasan Çitak and Ramazan Çitak) are released after statement procedures on May 18, 2022, and 1 person (Esat Subaşı) is released by the court on judicial control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country.

(05/189) Journalist on Trial in İstanbul…

The retrial of the case against Reyhan Çapan, editor in chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed by a state of emergency decree, is held on May 18, 2022, as the local court’s decision was overturned by the Court of Cassation.

The court sentenced Reyhan Çapan to 1 year and 6 months.

(05/190) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) provincial co-chair Seval Gülmez is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on May 18, 2022.

The court decided to release Seval Gülmez and adjourned the trial to October 19, 2022.

Seval Gülmez was detained on April 5, 2021, and was arrested by the court on April 12, 2021. She was released from prison by the court at the first trial held on September 6, 2021 but was arrested once again on February 2, 2022.

(05/191) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 17 people, for participating in the press declaration held on May 13, 2019 to draw attention to the hunger strike in prison, is held at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 9 on May 18, 2022. The court acquitted 17 people.

(05/192) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 16 people, for a protest about ill prisoners, is held at Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 51 on May 18, 2022.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 27, 2022.

(05/193) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against police officer H. A., for causing death of Cihan Can, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on May 18, 2022.

It is learned that the Forensic Medicine Report submitted to the court, states that the defendant police officer was hundred percent at fault. The court adjourned the hearing to May 23, 2022.

Cihan Can lost his life after being hit by a police vehicle driven by police officer H. A. on Turgut Özal avenue in Diyarbakır on December 27, 2019.

(05/194) Attack on Labour Party Office in Rize…

On 19 May 2022, an unidentified person or persons attacked the Labour Party office in Fındıklı district of Rize. It was learned that some materials in the party office were damaged as a result of the attack, where no one was killed or injured.

(05/195) Ban of Events in Urfa…

Urfa Governorate’s Office made a declaration on May 19, 2022, and banned all protests and events in open-door areas (meeting, march, press declaration, hunger strike, sit-in, opening stands and tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners etc.) and entry to the city of those who will participate in such events for 2 days as of May 19, 2022.

(05/196) Ban of Commemoration in Istanbul…

Kadıköy Sub-Governorate’s Office made an announcement on May 17, 2022 and banned the event to be held on May 18, 2022 to commemorate İbrahim Kaypakkaya and others who lost their lives in May, on the grounds that “There is a strong belief that a crime will be committed during the event, from the posts on the social media”.

(05/197) Discriminatory and Racist Posters Hanged by the Municipality in Bolu…

It is learned that on May 18, 2022, posters with racist and discriminatory content in Arabic and Turkish titled “Last Call from Bolu Municipality to Temporary Asylum Seekers” were hung on the boards across the city by the municipality. It is learned that the posters were removed on May 19, 2022 with the decision of the prosecutor’s office on the grounds of ‘hate and discrimination’.

(05/198) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 3 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,443 as of May 18, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 4 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,485 as of May 19, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,918 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,060,112 as of May 19, 2022.
