It is learned from the news coverage of September 17, 2020 that 3 HPG militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Hakurk area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on September 11, 2020.

(09/184) Person Wounded Due to Fire Opened by Soldiers in Van…

It is learned that a person named Orhan Hanay got wounded due to fire opened by soldiers in Dayanç neighbourhood in Çaldıran district of Van on September 16, 2020.

(09/185) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 17, 2020 that, 6 prisoners in Sincan Prison are transferred to other prisons under coercion. Names of prisoners and prisons they are transferred to are: Mahmut Konuk (Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison), Acun Karadağ and Alev Şahin (Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Closed Prison), Nazan Bozkurt (Gebze Women’s Prison), Mehmet Dersulu (Bolu F Type Prison) and Armağan Özbaş (Kırıkkale Keskin Prison). 6 people who were participators of “I Want My Job Back” protests in Yüksel Street, Ankara, were detained on August 13, 2020 and were arrested on August 22, 2020.

(09/186) Allegation of Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Van…

On September 11, 2020, 2 people (Osman Şiban and Servet Turgut) were detained by soldiers in Çığlıca hamlet of Çatak district of Van, and they were taken away by helicopter. It was found out 2 days later that, they were admitted in intensive care unit of Van Regional Education and Research Hospital. It is learned from the news coverage of September 17, 2020 that Osman Şiban was discharged from intensive care unit and has memory loss. The news reports cover photographs of Osman Şiban at hospital, with blood and bruises in his eyes. Osman Şiban was given a medical report from a hospital he was taken on September 11, 2020 which states blood coming from his digestive canal besides eye bruises, and trauma caused swellings on head, neck and face.

(09/187) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1408 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on September 17, 2020 at 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(09/188) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration of Bimeks workers at Boğaziçi University campus on September 17, 2020 and detained 20 people by using physical violence. Bimeks workers who were dismissed without being paid wages and compensation, wanted to protest Vedat Akgiray, owner of the company, who also lectures at the university. It is learned that 16 of detainees were released on the same day while Umut-Sen union spokesperson Betül Celep and 3 workers were still under custody. Detained people are: Warehouse, Harbour, Dock and Sea Workers Union chair Murat Bostancı, Independent Mine Workers’ Union organisers Kamil Kartal and Başaran Aksu, Umut-Sen union spokesperson Betül Celep, Neslihan Acar, Ercan Yenigün, Atakan Başaran, Emine Soysal, Ümmühan Derya, Murat Derin, Kâmil Çetin, Dilek Aslan and Emine Çakmak.

On September 17, 2020 the police prevented the press declaration of Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim-Sen) in front of Ankara Directorate of National Education building, to protest being prevented from entering the building for a meeting about opening of schools.

(09/190) Detained DTK Co-Chair in Hakkari…

On September 17, 2020, Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair and HDP former Hakkari MP Leyla Güven is detained after she attended an event in Hakkari. Leyla Güven is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(09/191) Detained Peace Mother in Hakkari…

On September 17, 2020, Hakkari Peace Mothers’ Assembly member Fatma Turan is detained in Hakkari, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’. Fatma Turan is released by the court on judicial control conditions on the same day.

(09/192) Detained People in Batman…

It is learned that 1 person (Mehmet Çetinkaya) is detained on the grounds of a finalised court verdict against him, in Korik neighbourhood of Beşiri district of Batman on September 17, 2020. IT is reported that 2 other people (İbrahim Çetinkaya and Şefik Aksu) are also detained, and 3 people were subjected to physical violence of the police.

(09/193) Detained Association Chair and Members in Mersin…

Abdulselam Kutlu, chair of Precarious Workers’ Association who was detained in Mersin on September 15, 2020, is released by the court with a ban on leaving the country, om September 17, 2020. 2 members of the association (Fadil Sevinç and Kazım Acar) who were also detained were released after statement procedures on the same day.

(09/194) Detained TİP Executive in Antalya…

It is learned that Enes Keskin, Uzunköprü district executive of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) in Edirne province, was detained for his social media posts, on September 15, 2020 in Antalya; and was released by the court with a ban on leaving the country on September 16, 2020.

(09/195) Former DBP Co-Chair on Trial…

The final trial of the case against Democratic Regions Party (DBP) former co-chair Sebahat Tuncel, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ by her expressions “Tayyip Erdoğan is a complete misogynist” in a speech she gave in 2016, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 10 on September 17, 2020. The court sentenced Sebahat Tuncel to 11 months and 20 days.

(09/196) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against journalists Canan Coşkun, Ali Açar and Can Uğur, on the grounds of ‘targeting a public officer who took part in the fight against terrorism’ in their news reports about death of Berkin Elvan, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 on September 17, 2020. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to November 10, 2020.

(09/197) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Can Dündar, former executive editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper for publishing the footage of MIT (National Intelligence Service) trucks stopped in Adana and Hatay on January 19, 2014, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on September 17, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Can Dündar on the charges of ‘securing confidential for the purpose of espionage’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’.

The court accepted demand of Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office and decided to treat Can Dündar as a fugitive in case he does not appear to court in 15 days, and to confiscate his property; and adjourned the trial to October 14, 2020.

The trial of the case against Mısra Öz Sel, for her social media posts is held at Çorlu Penal Court of First Instance No 5 on September 17, 2020. Mısra Öz Sel’s son Oğuz Arda Sel died in the train crash in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ on July 8, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to February 21, 2021.

The first trial of the case against Banu Özdemir, former provincial deputy chair of Republican People’s party (CHP) in Izmir, for her social media posts about the song “Bella Ciao” heard from mosques in several districts of Izmir, is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 50 on September 17, 2020. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to November 28, 2020.

(09/200) Constitutional Court Decision on Enis Berberoğlu…

The Constitutional Court concluded on the appeal of Enis Berberoğlu, former MP of CHP, who was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months, for the case known as “MIT Trucks”, on September 17, 2020. The Constitutional Court decided that Enis Berberoğlu’s right to be elected and engage in political activities and right to personal liberty and security was violated by the local court verdict, and the ruling shall be sent to the Court of Cassation so that the consequences of the violation can be eliminated in a retrial. Enis Berberoğlu was stripped of MP status on June 4, 2020 because of this finalised jail sentence.

On September 17, 2020, 6 people are detained through an Afyon based investigation.

(09/202) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 66 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,648 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on September 17, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 7,315 and total number of confirmed cases is 298,039 as of September 17, 2020.
