It is learned from the news coverage of 17 October 2024 that, some prisoners including Necdet Öztürk in Kırşehir High-Security Prison went on a 3-day alternating hunger strike against rights violations in prison.
(10/247) Prisoner Whose Release Was Postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…
It is learned from the news coverage of 18 October 2024 that, the release of Tamer Tanrıkulu, a prisoner in Aksaray T Type Prison, who completed his life sentence of 30 years on 3 February 2024, was postponed for the third time in September 2024 by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (İGK) on the grounds of ‘not being in good behavior’ and was extended for 6 more months.
In May 2024, as a result of the appeal against the decision of the CIGK to extend Tamer Tanrıkulu’s release for another 6 months, Aksaray Execution Judgeship ruled that ‘the opinion of the board is not supported by concrete facts, the reasoning of the decision is not compatible with the concrete situation, there is no accuracy in the decision and for these reasons, the decision should be canceled’.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 18, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage of 17 October 2024 that, SOL Party members who wanted to deliver the signatures demanding free school meals in schools to Zonguldak Provincial Directorate of National Education and to hold a press statement were prevented from entering the garden of the institution. It is reported in the news that SOL Party members held a press statement in front of the Provincial Directorate of National Education and then delivered the signatures to the institution.

The final trial of the case against Özgül Roda, a prisoner in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on October 17, 2024. The court sentenced Özgül Roda to 3 years and 9 months on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, on the grounds that Özgül Roda answered ‘I do not know’ to the question ‘Is PKK a terrorist organization?

On 18 October 2024, Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 started to hear the case against Diyarbakır Bar Association President Nahit Eren and lawyers Atilla Berk, Diyar Rüknedin Çetedir, Hatice Demir, Mehdi Özdemir, Mehmet Erdem, Ali İsmet Girgin, Öykü Çakmak Usal, Serdar Özer, Seyit Rıza Karakaş and Zuhal Sayılgan Işık, who were members of the Board of Directors at the time, for the statement titled ‘Confrontation and Halalisation should start from 24 April 1915’ published on the website of Diyarbakır Bar Association on 24 April 2022. The court acquitted 11 people on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the state’.

The case against 30 people including 4 arrestees, about 4 people including 3 members of Şenyaşar family, who died during and after the incidents in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, when AKP MP Halil İbrahim Yılmaz was visiting shopkeepers, continued at Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 3 on October 18, 2024. The court released Fadıl Şenyaşar and other arrested defendants Celal Yıldız, Enver Yıldız, and Mekail Şimşek on house confinement and adjourned the trial to 21 February 2025.
(10/254) Police Officer on Trial in Istanbul…
On 17 October 2024, the final trial of the case against 3 police officers (L. M., C. B. and S. E. K.) for strip search of Mücella Yapıcı and Cansu Yapıcı who were detained during Gezi Park protests in 2013, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11. The court ruled that the action of the defendant police officers, who were demanded to be sentenced for ‘torture’ in the indictment, was ‘misconduct in office’ and sentenced defendant police officers C. B. and S. E. K. to 5 months each for ‘misconduct in office’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict, and acquitted defendant police officer L. M. on the same charge.

It is learned from the news coverage of 17 October 2024 that Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Deputy Chair Ahmet Selim Yurdakul, who gave an interview to Yenigün newspaper on the final report of ‘Family Institution Workshop’ organized by MHP on 14-15 October 2024, made discriminatory and phobic statements such as ‘We consider LGBT propaganda as a threat not only for our country and nation but also for the whole world (…) In LGBT propaganda, it is possible to talk about a raging minority that is unnatural and deliberately trying to transform all nations’.

It is learned from the news coverage of 17 October 2024 that, a total of 53 news reports and social media posts including news reports on bribery and irregularities in Mardin Midyat Municipality on http://mezopotamyaajansi40.com, https://www.birgun.net, https://yeniyasamgazetesi6.com, https://www.dokuz8haber.net, and https://artigercek.com were banned from access by Midyat Criminal Peace Judgeship’s decision dated 15 October 2024, on the grounds of protection of public order.

The Governorate of Van announced on 17 October 2024 that Karsız Tepe, Kanlı Geçit Sırtı, Beyazpur Tepe, Sivri Tepe, Avcılar Tepe, Sivritaş Tepe, Tozlu Sırtı, Art Tepe, Uçdere, Bedi Sırtı areas in the Başkale district of Van were declared as temporary special security zones for 15 days between 18 October 2024 and 1 November 2024.
