(10/168) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 18, 2022 that, 1 militant died in August 2022, 7 militants died in September 2022, and 9 militants died in October 2022 in clashes between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

(10/169) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 18, 2022 that Sariye Taşkesen, a prisoner who was taken from Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison to Diyarbakır Women’s Prison on September 29, 2022 to attend the trial of the case against her; was subjected to physical violence for she rejected strip search at the entrance of the prison.

(10/170) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on October 18, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(10/171) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened into the press declaration in front of the Miners’ Monument in Çankaya district of Ankara, by the Labour and Democracy Forces to protest the explosion in the coal mine which killed 41 workers on October 14, 2022 in Amasra district of Bartın; and detained 28 people including 2 children by using physical violence. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

On October 18, 2022, 7 people including children are detained in house raids in Istanbul. The reason for detention is unknown.

(10/173) Human Rights Defenders on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against former Van-Hakkari Medical chamber chair and HRFT physician Hüseyin Yaviç and HRFT Van Center secretary Sevim Çiçek, on the grounds of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations” is held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 4 on October 18, 2022. After defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to January 26, 2023.

On October 23, 2021, doctor Rümeysa Berin Şen lost her life in a traffic accident in Ankara. The Turkish Medical Association has organized nation-wide press declarations to commemorate her, but the police have intervened the one that held at Medical Faculty of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and detained HRFT physician and former Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber chair Hüseyin Yaviç and HRFT Van Center secretary Sevim Çiçek.

(10/174) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against journalist Ender İmrek over his article titled “Turkey is burning, the Palace is watching” published on Evrensel newspaper, is held at Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No. 44 on October 18, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Ender İmrek on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The court adjourned the trial to January 10, 2023.

(10/175) Investigation Against Journalist in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 18, 2022 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Pınar Gayıp for her social media posts about the explosion in the coal mine in Amasra district of Bartın where 41 workers died; and that Pınar Gayıp made her official statement through the investigation to Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate.

(10/176) Community Houses Executives and Members on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against 24 members and executives of the Community Houses who have been detained by the police intervening in the press declaration of “We Want to Work Safely, Live Humanly” in Ankara on October 24, 2022; is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 60 on October 17, 2022. It is learned that 3 police officers entered the courtroom with their weapons, and upon the reaction of the lawyers, the police officers left the courtroom and the court filed a criminal complaint against the police officers. After the defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to January 9, 2023.

(10/177) Proposal to Amend the Press Law…

The Draft Law Amending the Press Law and Some Laws No. 7418 which was accepted by the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly on October 14, 2022, is entered into force after being published on the Official Gazette on October 18, 2022.

(10/178) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On October 18, 2022, 11 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced that a detention warrant was issued against 704 people on October 18, 2022 and that 543 people were detained in operations covering 59 cities.
