It is learned that 1 village guard got wounded in a bombing attack outside of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak on November 17, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 17, 2021 that, some prisoners in Istanbul Silivri L Type Prison No 5 were subjected to disciplinary proceedings on the grounds of dancing the halay, and the books of prisoners were seized.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 17, 2021 that, journalist Elif Ersoy who was on hunger strike in Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Prison since September 11, 2021, ended her strike on the 57th day as her demands were met.

Syrian musician Omar Souleyman is detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ in Urfa on November 17, 2021.

(11/185) Detained HDP Members in Tekirdağ…

On November 17, 2021, the police raided HDP’s district office and several houses in Çerkezköy district of Tekirdağ and detained 6 members and executives of HDP including HDP’s provincial co-chair Cahit Direk and Çerkezköy district co-chair Kasım Güzel. It is learned that the police raids were through the investigation about the demonstration of HDP in Tekirdağ on November 7, 2021.

Berfin Polat, central executive board member of the Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF) who were detained for social media posts, at Kıraç police station in Esenyurt district of Istanbul where she went to make her official statement through an investigation, is arrested by the court on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

On November 17, 2021, 27 people are detained in house raids in Şırnak. It is learned that detainees are restricted from seeing their lawyers for 24 hours.

(11/188) The Case Against Diyarbakır Bar Association Executive Board Former Members…

The trial of the case against 11 lawyers (Ahmet Özmen, Mahsum Bati, Nuşin Uysal Ekinci, Cihan Ülsen, Sertaç Buluttekin, Muhammet Neşet Girasun, Serhat Eren, İmran Gökdere, Velat Alan, Ahmet Dağ and Nahit Eren), members of previous executive board of Diyarbakır Bar Association, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 13 on November 17, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 11 lawyers on the charges of violating Article 216 (provoking hatred and hostility among people) and Article 301 (degrading Turkish Nation, State of Turkish Republic, the organs and institutions of the State) of Turkish Penal Code. Lawyers are charged for the expression “Armenian Genocide” stated in the Bar Association’s declaration on April 24, 2017; the expression “Kurdistan” in anther declaration and the report on killing of a civilian in Oğul village of Hakkari.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to February 21, 2022.

(11/189) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

On September 15, 2020, Penal Department No 16 of the Court of Cassation has reversed the verdicts against 2 lawyers, the Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) chair Selçuk Kozağaçlı and the People’s Law Office (HHB) member Barkın Timtik. The court has ruled consolidation of the case against 2 lawyers with another case on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 18. The retrial of the case is held on November 17, 2021.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for 2 lawyers on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court refused the defendant lawyers’ demand for broadening the investigation, decided to continue detention of 2 lawyers and adjourned the trial to January 5, 2021.

(11/190) Boğaziçi University Students on Trial…

The trial of the case against 7 students of Boğaziçi University, on the grounds of a picture depicting Kaaba at an exhibition as part of protests against the new rector appointed to the university, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 21 on November 17, 2021.

The court adjourned the trial to February 9, 2022.

(11/191) Journalist on Trial in Erzurum…

The final trial of the case against Dindar Karataş, a reporter of Mezopotamya News Agency, is held at Erzurum Heavy Penal Court No 3 on November 17, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Dindar Karataş on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court acquitted Dindar Karataş.

Dindar Karataş was detained on November 24, 2020 and was arrested by the court on November 26, 2020. He was released from prison by the court at the first trial held on February 9, 2021.

(11/192) Police Raid to HDP Office in Tekirdağ…

The police raided HDP’s office in Çerkezköy district of Tekirdağ on November 17, 2021. It is learned that the police seized published and digital material in the office.

(11/193) Proceedings Against Parliamentary Members…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 17, 2021 that, 5 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 5 parliamentary members are submitted to Grand National Assembly.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are:

  • Republican People’s Party (CHP) group deputy and Manisa MP Özgür Özel;
  • CHP Istanbul MP Engin Özkoç;
  • HDP Adana MP Kemal Peköz;
  • HDP Mersin MP Fatma Kurtalan;
  • HDP Mardin MP Pero Dündar.

(11/194) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On November 17, 2021, 2 people are detained in a house raid in Ankara.

2 people who were detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally flee abroad, are arrested by the court on November 17, 2021.

(11/195) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 229 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 23,867 as of November 17, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 74,202 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 8,480,986 as of November 17, 2021.
