(05/156) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned that, 7 prisoners (İlhami İşçi, Uğur Ürün, Zennar Demir, Hiccet Umui, Reşit Dayan, Uğur Uyar, Ümit Özen) who were on hunger strike to demand an end to right violations in Antep Islahiye T Type Prison since April 6, 2022, ended their strike as their demands were met on May 17, 2022.

(05/157) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 17, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(05/158) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 17, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/159) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Urfa…

The gendarmerie intervened those who protest the dismantling of electricity transformers by Dicle Electricity Distribution Company, due to debts in Haliliye district of Urfa on May 17, 2022 and detained 5 people using physical violence. Detained people are released the same day.

(05/160) Police Intervention to a protest in Balıkesir…

It is learned that 3 people who wanted to participate in the press declaration for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Interphobia, in Balıkesir on May 17, 2022, were detained on the grounds that they were carrying a rainbow flag.

(05/161) Police Intervention to Political Party Event in Diyarbakır…

It is reported that the police intervened in the sit-in, which was held before the conference organized by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır on May 17, 2022, to protest the police that wanted make body search on participators; and that HDP Şırnak MP Hüseyin Kaçmaz was injured as a result of the intervention.

(05/162) Detained Children for ‘Insulting the President’ in Istanbul…

On May 17, 2022, 2 children (E. G. and B. D.) are detained by the police coming to their school, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ by the slogans chanted during the Feminist Night March. 2 children are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(05/163) Detained People in Şırnak…

3 of 29 people (Mahsum Birlik, Ebubekir Çıkmaz and Abdullah Bayar) who were detained in house raids in central, Cizre and İdil districts of Şırnak on May 10, 2022 and following days, are arrested by the court on May 17, 2022. It is learned that 24 people were released and detention period for 2 people is extended.

The Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) former provincial co-chair Mehmet Varol who was detained in Adıyaman on May 13, 2022, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on May 17, 2022.

(05/165) Detained People in Hakkari…

On May 17, 2022, 2 people (Hasan Çitak and Ramazan Çitak) are detained in house raids in Yüksekova district of Hakkari. It is learned that the reason for detention was the photographs taken during their visits to the graves of their relatives who lost their lives in the conflicts in Syria.

On May 17, 2022, 3 people (Talip Balıkçı, Burhan Elmaz and Hikmet Altun) are detained in house raids in Mardin. The reason for detention is unknown.

(05/167) Detained Human Rights Defender and Other Person…

The Human Rights Association (İHD) central executive board member Metin Kılavuz and DBP Diyarbakır former provincial co-chair Hafize İpek, who have been detained through an Ankara based “Kobanê investigation” and were released; and were detained once again through the same investigation in Diyarbakır on May 15, 2022, are released by the court on May 17, 2022.

(05/168) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Naşide Toprak, HDP co-mayor of Silvan district of Diyarbakır who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on May 17, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 4, 2022. Naşide Toprak was suspended by the Ministry of Interior on March 23, 2020 and the sub-governor was appointed as a trustee.

(05/169) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against journalist Nurcan Yalçın, for the interviews she made with women before the curfews in Sur district of Diyarbakır between 2015 and 2016, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on May 17, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for Nurcan Yalçın on the charge of ‘knowingly aiding an illegal organisation’. Nurcan Yalçın attended the trial and made her defence. The court adjourned the trial to July 5, 2022.

(05/170) Journalist and Executives of ESP and SGDF on Trial…

The trial of the case against 9 people including Ali Sönmez Kayar, Etkin News Agency reporter; Sıtkı Güngör, central executive board member of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP); Narin Duru, member of The Confederation of Public Employees’ Trade Unions (KESK); and Ali Deniz Esen, central executive board member of The Confederation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32, on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held on May 17, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to October 11, 2022.

Sıtkı Güngör, Ali Deniz Esen, Narin Duru, Eren Bulut and Ali Sönmez Kayar were detained on February 1, 2018 in Istanbul and were arrested on February 6, 2018. These 5 people were released by the court on judicial control conditions on October 31, 2018.

(05/171) The Case Against Tarlabaşı Community Center…

The trial of the case against the Association for Supporting Tarlabaşı Community (known as Tarlabaşı Community Center), demanding the declaration of the expiration of the association on the grounds of ‘unlawful and immoral’ activities, is held at Istanbul Civil Court of Peace No 18 on May 18, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to November 2, 2022.

(05/172) Cancelled Concert in Bitlis…

It is learned that the concert of the Stêrka Karwan music group, which sang Kurdish songs, that was to be held as part of the Spring Festival at Bitlis Eren University on May 17, 2022, was cancelled without any reason.

(05/173) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On May 17, 2022, 6 people are detained in operations covering 5 cities through an Ankara based investigation; 29 people are detained in operations covering 16 cities through a Balıkesir based investigation and 25 people are detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally flee abroad.

(05/174) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 7 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,608 as of May 17, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,911 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,057,184 as of May 17, 2022.
