(03/112) Prisoner Prevented from Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 18, 2025 that Belma Nergis, provincial co-chair of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), who is kept in Van T Type Prison, was not taken to infirmary and was not given the food she should consume due to her illness.

(03/113) No Response to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on March 18, 2025 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa in order to visit PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(03/114) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

On May 18, 2025, the police intervened the hunger strike protest of 7 people, whose houses were evacuated by the governorate, in front of the municipality building in Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul on March 10, 2025 and detained 7 people. The detainees were released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

(03/115) Detentions, Interventions and Preventions Against Newroz Celebrations…

On February 16, 2025, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) district co-chair Nezir Budak, who was an emcee at the Newroz celebrations in Diyadin district of Ağrı on March 15, 2025, was detained on the allegations of making propaganda for an illegal organisation in his speech in Kurdish at the District Security Directorate where he was called to testify on February 16, 2025 and was arrested by the criminal court of peace on February 17, 2025.

It is claimed in the news reports that Nezir Budak’s Kurdish speech, which was used as a reason for his arrest, was translated by the police with the help of internet because there was no Kurdish translator and the translation was wrong.

(03/116) Revocation of IBB’s Diploma…

On March 18, 2025, the Board of Directors of Istanbul University decided to cancel the diploma of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), on the grounds that he made an irregular transfer to the English program of Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration in 1990, contrary to the decisions of the Council of Higher Education and the conditions sought by the legislation.

(03/117) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Besile Narin, co-mayor of Hani district of Diyarbakır, continued on March 18, 2025 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The indictment demands sentence for Besile Narin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court adjourned the trial to April 8, 2025.

The final hearing of the case against Sendika.Org editorial board member Ali Ergin Demirhan, on the grounds of a news article on the attack to Charlie Hebdo magazine office in France, in which 12 people lost their lives, was held at Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No 29 on March 17, 2025. The court sentenced Ali Engin Demirhan to 3 months and 22 days for ‘insulting religious values’.

It is learned from news coverage of March 17, 2025 that, an investigation was initiated against Short Wave reporter Altan Sancar for his news report titled “Prosecutor insults suspect, lawyer out the door, soldier detained” and that he was called by the police to give his statement through the investigation.

(03/120) Investigation Against the Chairman of Halkevleri…

It is learned from news coverage of March 18, 2025 that Artvin Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Nebiye Merttürk, chair of Halkevleri, on the grounds of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among people’, for her speech about Reşit Kibar, who died in an armed attack on September 3, 2024; and that Nebiye Merttürk gave her official statement through the investigation.

(03/121) Discriminatory and Phobic Speech…

Osman Aşkın Bak, Minister of Youth and Sports, made a speech at an iftar in Edirne on March 17, 2025 and stated the following: “There are now movements of de-sexing and LGBT. That’s why we need to be very careful” and used discriminatory and phobic expressions.
