(07/130) Prisoners whose Release was Adjourned by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 17, 2025 that, the release of Abdullah Yılmaz, a prisoner in Izmir High Security Prison No 2, who completed the execution of his life sentence, is adjourned for 3 months by a decision of Prison Administration and Monitoring Board (CİGK), on the grounds of rejecting to repentance.

On July 18, 2025, 15 people including municipality employees are detained through an investigation against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) on the allegations of ‘membership to a criminal organization’, ‘extortion’, ‘bribery’, ‘qualified fraud’, ‘unlawful seizure of personal data’, ‘bid rigging’.

The final trial of the case against journalist Delal Akyüz is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 13 on July 18, 2025. The court sentenced Delal Akyüz to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organization member’.

The final trial of the case against journalists Melike Aydın and Tolga Güney is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 13 on July 18, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for Melike Aydın and Tolga Güney on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court acquitted 2 journalists.

(07/134) Trade Unionist on Trial in Antep…

The final trial of the case against BİRTEK-SEN chair Mehmet Türkmen, on the charges of ‘inciting to commit crime’ and ‘insulting the institutions and organs of the state’ is held at Antep Criminal Court of First Instance No 55 on July 18, 2025. The court sentenced Mehmet Türkmen to 6 months and 7 days on the charge of ‘incitement to commit a crime’ and decided to adjourn the sentence. The court acquitted Mehmet Türkmen on the charge of ‘insulting the institutions and organs of the state’.

Mehmet Türkmen was detained on February 14, 2025 before a press statement he was to attend and was released on the same day. On February 17, 2025, he was arrested after being detained once again on February 16, 2025. On March 24, 2025, Mehmet Türkmen was released and upon the objection of the prosecutor’s office, house arrest was imposed as a judicial control measure. On April 17, 2024, the court ruled to lift the house arrest measure, but upon the objection of the prosecutor’s office, the house arrest measure was re-imposed on Türkmen.

The first trial of the case against 6 people who were detained in police intervention to the event organized by Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) in Gülhane Park in Fatih district of Istanbul, started to be held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 30 on July 17, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for 6 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to October 14, 2025.

The first trial of the case against 7 people who were detained during the police intervention against the protest at Middle East University for the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, President of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, started to be held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 30 on July 17, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for 7 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to October 11, 2025.

The trial of the case against 24 people who were detained during the police intervention against the Pride March organized in Ankara METU campus in 2022, started on July 17, 2025 at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 30. The indictment demands sentence for 24 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’.

During the hearing, defence witnesses described the torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to during detention and in custody. A person named E.A. stated the following: “We were detained under torture. I saw other people being subjected to violence while being detained. I saw blood flowing from people’s heads”. A.Y. stated the following: “I was laid on the ground and kicked. Lastly, he tried to kick my head. Psychological violence continued during the detention process.” Another person, whose name is unknown, stated the following: “I was also subjected to police violence on the way to the hospital. I witnessed others being subjected to kicks, punches and rape threats. Our friends were sexually harassed in detention.”

The court adjourned the trial to September 17, 2025.

On July 17, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of July 17, 2025 that, Konak District Governorate issued a closure order for 14 flats where trans women live in Bornova Street in Alsancak neighbourhood of Konak district of Izmir.
