(07/197) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of July 17, 2018 that, 3 militants died in a bombardment of Turkihs Armed Forces against Qandil area in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government.

It is claimed on news coverage of July 17, 2018 that a forest fire started in Gabar Mountain in Cizre district of Şırnak, due to cannon balls shot from nearby military stations, and that the fire was not extinguished.

(07/198) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 17, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on July 17, 2018, 3 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt, Mahmut Konuk and Derviş Lermi) and at 18.00 3 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt, Derviş Lermi and İlker Işık) were detained.

Thus in total 6 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on July 17, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(07/199) People Detained in a Raid to Condolence Room in Diyarbakır…

The police raided the condolence room in Lice district of Diyarbakır, for Mehmet Yakışır, a militant died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in Gümüşhane, on July 17, 2018. The police seized the posters of Mehmet Yakışır and PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, detained 4 people from Yakışır family (Salih Yakışır, Fatma Yakışır, Remziye Yakışır and Ramazan Yanar). It is learned that detainees were released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

Lawyer Göray Karadur, who was detained for ‘insulting the President on social media posts’ in Muğla, on July 17, 2018, is released the same day on juridical control conditions by the court.

(07 /201) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 10 academicians (Assist. Professor E.B., lecturer G.M. from Kadir Has University and research assistant Canan Özbey dismissed from Marmara University, Assist. Professor Nazlı Ökten Gülsoy from Galatasaray University, lecturer Zübeyde Gaye Çankaya Eksen, Assoc. Professor Ayten Alkan from İstanbul University, research assistant Didem Çınar Ünal and Assoc. Professor Ahmet Atıl Aşıcı from İstanbul Technical University, research asisstants Gülay Kılıçaslan and Tuba Kıyan, dismissed from Yıldız Technical University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced E. B., G. M., and Canan Özbey to 1 year and 3 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and postponed the sentences. The court adjourned 7 of the trials to September 26, 4 of the trials to December 18, and 1 trial to December 20, 2018.

The case against Assist. Professor Emine Fişek for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24 is held on July 17, 2018. The court adjourned the trial to October 25, 2018.

(07/202) Co-Mayors, HDP and DBP Executives on Trial in Urfa…

The final trial of the case against 22 people, including Zeynel Taş, co-mayor of Bozova district; Mehmet Sinan Burun, deputy mayor of Viranşehir district where a trustee has been appointed; İzzettin Gök, DBP (Democratic Regions Party) Eyyübiye district co-chair; Bazo Yılmaz, Halfeti district council member; Hizni Kılıç, DBP Ceylanpınar district former co-chair; Asuman Yaman and Adnan Etli, former provincial co-chairs of HDP, on Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 6 for their activities within Democratic Society Congress (DTK), is held on July 17, 2018. The court acquitted 2 people, and separated the cases of 5 people. The court sentenced 15 people to jail penalties differing from 1 year 6 months and 22 days to 11 years and 10 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’; and decided to continue detention for them.

(07/203) Co-Mayors on Trial in Muş…

The final trial of the case against Figen Yaşar and Rahmi Çelik, co-mayors of Bulanık district of Muş, on Muş Heavy Penal Court is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced Rahmi Çelik to 10 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’, separated the case of Figen Yaşar and released her.

(07/204) Journalists, Lawyers and ESP Members on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against 23 people (13 of them are arrested) including lawyers from Law Office of the Oppressed, Etkin News Agency reporters and members and executives of Socialist Party of the Oppressed, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 27 is held on July 17, 2018. The court released 5 people (Özgen Sadet, journalist Havva Cuştan, İsmail Geçer, Meral Tarar and Onur Birbir) and adjourned the trial to November 29, 2018.

The case against Pelin Ünker, reporter of Cumhuriyet newspaper, and Orhan Erinç, executive council chair of Cumhuriyet Foundation, for the news reports on “Paradise Papers”, upon the complaint made by former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and his sons, on Istanbul Anatolian Penal Court of First Instance No 24, started on July 17, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 6, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of July 17, 2018 that, Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against HDP Diyarbakır MP’s Remziye Tosun and Musa Farisoğulları, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, for attending the funeral of Mehmet Yakışır, a militant died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in Gümüşhane.

(07/207) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against Veysel Ok, a lawyer from Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), on the charge of ‘publicly humiliating judicial bodies of the state’ in a newspaper interview, on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 37 is held on July 17, 2018. After defence hearings, the judge recused from the case and adjourned the trial to November 22, 2018.

(07/208) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist İdris Yılmaz, for a news report on violence against a child, on Erciş Penal Court of First Instance No 1 is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced İdris Yılmaz to 1 year and 3 months for ‘defamation through press’.

(07/209) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On July 17, 2018, 34 people in operations covering 13 cities through a Malatya based investigation; 1 person on a warrant in Zonguldak through a Hatay based investigation; 3 people through a Tekirdağ based investigation; 1 military member on active duty in Ankara; 11 people in operations covering 13 cities through a Kayseri based investigation; 36 people including military members on active duty in operations covering 26 cities through an Izmir based investigation are detained.

2 teachers dismissed by the state of emergency decree, Z. A. and G. A., who were detained in Karabük, are arrested by the court on July 17, 2018.

6 of 15 people who were detained through a Kayseri based investigation are arrested by the court on July 17, 2018. 5 people are released on juridical control conditions. It is learned that 4 people are still under custody.

12 of 19 people who were detained through a Zonguldak based investigation are arrested by the court on July 17, 2018. 7 people are released on juridical control conditions.

(07/210) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 3 people on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 1 is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced Cengiz Kıranşan to 8 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’, Mine Karaca to 4 years and 2 months and Ramazan Çolak to 2 years and 1 month for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

The final trial of the case against major Vedat Kandır, former Gendarmerie Commander of Çaldıran district, and former lieutenant Rıdvan Yıldırım, on Van Heavy Penal Court No 4 is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced 2 defendants to 7 years and 6 months each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trials of separate cases against 3 people (Mehmet Uzun, Remziye İrsin and Remziye Uslukılıç), on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 2, is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced Mehmet Uzun and Remziye İrsin to 6 years and 3 months, Remziye Uslukılıç to 1 year 6 months and 22 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against Ali Aksoy on the charge of being responsible for lawyer group of an illegal organisation, on Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 13 is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced Ali Aksoy to 11 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’, to 2 years and 11 months for ‘insulting the President’, to 1 year and 6 months for threatening deputy chief prosecutor Okan Bato, and to 4 years and 1 month for insulting deputy chief prosecutor Okan Bato; which in total makes 19 years and 9 months.

The final trial of the case against 316 people for the incidents in Beytepe Gendarmerie Schools Command during July 15 coup attempt, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 20 is held on July 17, 2018. The court sentenced 31 people including former brigadier general Sadık Köroğlu, commander of Gendarmerie Schools, to heavy life penalty for ‘violating the Constitution’. The court sentenced 1 defendant to 26 years and 8 months for ‘attempting to murder’ and 1 defendant to 13 years and 6 months for ‘deprivation of liberty’. The court separated the case of 285 defendants including 5 fugitives.

(07/211) Event Banned in Ankara…

It is learned that the application for an event to commemorate people died in Suruç Massacre 3 years ago, is rejected on July 17, 2018 by Ankara Governorate on the grounds that it is out of limited demonstration and march areas.

Kilis Governorate made a declaration on July 17, 2018 and announced that 13 regions are special security areas from July 6, 2018 to July 20, 2018.

Hatay Governorate made a declaration on July 17, 2018 and announced that 39 regions are special security areas from July 11, 2018 to July 25, 2018.
