It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2024, that 2 militants died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units (TSK) and HPG militants in Zap area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKBY) on January 12, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2024, that retired village guard İ. E. was found dead in his house in Kayapınar town of Gercüş district of Batman. It is claimed that İ. E. committed suicide.

(01/151) Prisoner Who Lost His Life in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2024, that Abdullah Varışlı, an ill prisoner in Erzurum Oltu Prison who was being treated for cancer, died in hospital on January 16, 2024.

22 people, who were detained on January 16, 2024, in Diyarbakır as part of operations conducted in 28 cities and in which 165 people were detained, were released after statement procedures at the police on January 18, 2024.

It is learned that a confidentiality decision was taken for the files of 21 people who were detained on the grounds of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ through operations covering 28 cities and detaining 165 people on January 16, 2024; and that detention period of 21 people was extended for 1 day.

It is learned that 1 person (F. O.) who was detained on the allegation of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through operations covering 28 cities and detaining 165 people on January 16, 2024, was released by the court on judicial control conditions (ban on leaving the country and giving signature) on January 17, 2023.

The retrial of the case against the police officer who killed Nihat Kazanhan (12) due to the police fire in Cizre district of Şırnak after the Constitutional Court ruled that the right to life was violated, continued on January 17, 2024, at Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court issued a warrant for the defendant police officer and adjourned the trial to March 13, 2024.

(01/156) The Trial of People Protesting the Decision to Withdraw from the Istanbul Convention in Izmir…

The trial of the case against 18 people, who were detained during the peaceful demonstration in Alsancak, Izmir on August 5, 2020, to protest the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, was held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 44 on January 17, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to May 28, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2024, that the sentence of 4 years 5 months and 10 days given by Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 to police officer S. K., the driver of the armoured vehicle involved in the death of Şahin Öner, who lost his life due to being hit by an armoured police vehicle during the protests in Diyarbakır on February 10, 2013, on the anniversary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan being brought to Turkey, was reversed by Penal Department No 3 of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals on the grounds of ‘incomplete investigation and research’.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2024, that following the right violation report, which was published on http://www.mezopotamyaajansi31. com about torture and ill-treatment of detainees by soldiers during house raids in Zorava rural area of Sur district of Diyarbakır on April 14, 2021, it is learned that the Constitutional Court ruled that the ban on access to Mezopotamya Agency’s website by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority and Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 3 is a violation of freedom of thought and expression and the ban should be lifted.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 18, 2024, that the Constitutional Court ruled that freedom of expression was violated after evaluating the application against 62 access bans including JINNEWS, Etkin News Agency (ETHA), Jin News Agency (JINHA), Özgür Gündem, Dicle News Agency (DİHA) which was closed down by a state of emergency decree.
