It is learned that 1 soldier (Ayberk Soyutemiz) died due to accidental hand grenade blast in a military base in the rural areas of Yüksekova district of Hakkari on January 16, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2022 that, a person (Fırat Eken) got wounded at the leg by the fire opened by a police officer conducting body search in Urfa on January 9, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2022 that, the food given to prisoners is inadequate and regular three course meal is reduced to two course meal this year due to economic crisis, in Düzce T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 17, 2022 that, the food given to prisoners is inadequate and the power is cut in some wards due to unpaid electricity bills in Antalya S Type Prison.

The police intervened the press declaration about Enes Kara, a university student who killed himself, held in Çankaya district of Ankara on January 17, 2022. The police detained 11 people by torture and ill-treatment and prevented journalists from recording. Detained 11 people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

Lawyer Sedat Düşünmez, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Van provincial executive and the spokesperson of the Law Commission is detained in Van on January 17, 2022. It is learned that the reason of detention is Sedat Düşünmez’s recording a trial. Sedat Düşünmez is released after statement procedures on the same day.

Mulla Ruşen, one of 2 people detained in Adıyaman on January 12, 2022, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘aiding and abetting an illegal organisation’ on January 17, 2022. 1 person is released on judicial control conditions.

On January 17, 2022, 3 people are detained in house raids in Silopi district of Şırnak. The reason of detention is unknown.

(01/159) Former DBP Co-Chair on Trial…

The trial of the case against Mehmet Arslan, former co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), through the investigation against Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on January 17, 2022.

The court refused to lift the judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to April 22, 2022.

Mehmet Arslan was detained on May 22, 2021 and was arrested by the court on May 24, 2021; and was released by the court at the trial held on September 30, 2021.

(01/160) Co-Mayors and Other People on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Mehmet Fatih Taş and Fatma Ay, co-mayors of Kulp district of Diyarbakır, and HDP district co-chair Mehmet Abidin Karaman, Kulp Municipality Civil Works Director Şener Aktaş, Mehmet Emin Ay and Kulp district council Yücel Çete and Ümit Fidan, on the charges of ‘killing on purpose’, ‘disrupting the integrity and unity of the country’, ‘intentional killing by causing fire, flood, destruction, sinking, bombing or by using nuclear, biological or chemical weapons’ is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on January 17, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 16, 2022.

Mehmet Fatih Taş, Fatma Ay, Şener Aktaş and Mehmet Emin Ay were detained through the investigation after bombing attack on September 12, 2019 in Kulp district where 7 people died and were arrested on September 16, 2019. They were released by the court at the first trial held on September 11, 2019.

The final trial of the case against 6 people (Berken Kızılboğa, city council member from HDP in Tuşba district of Van; Serap Güvenç, Star Women’s Association chair; Handan Karakoyun, HDP Van co-chair and 3 activists of Free Women’s Movement) is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 7 on Januar7 17, 2022. The court acquitted 6 people.

The final trial of the case against Etkin News Agency reporter Meşale Tolu is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 29 is held on January 17, 2022. The court acquitted Meşale Tolu on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(01/163) Association Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Yıldız Damla, a member of MEBYA-DER (Association of People Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations), is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 17, 2022.

The court sentenced Yıldız Damla to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(01/164) Child on Trial in Urfa…

The final trial of the case against a child (H. Ç.) on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘degrading the symbols of state sovereignty’ by a social media post saying “How happy is the one who says I am a Kurd”, is held at Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 7 on January 17, 2022. The court acquitted H. Ç. on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and sentenced to 8 months on the charge of ‘degrading the symbols of state sovereignty’ on the grounds of throwing the Turkish flag, and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

On January 17, 2022, 2 people are detained in an alleged attempt to illegally flee abroad in Edirne.

(01/166) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 162 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 64,935 as of January 17, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 84,920 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 10,522,099 as of January 17, 2022.
