(08/166) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, in Iskenderun T Type Closed Prison, prisoners were subjected to physical and verbal violence of the correction officers; the visit duration was limited to 40 minutes; the food given to prisoners was inadequate and of poor quality; the prices at the prison commissary were high; the prisoners were prevented from social rights and were not given Evrensel, Birgün and Yeni Yaşam newspapers.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, 57 prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler T Type Closed Prison No 2 were subjected to disciplinary proceedings on charges of “attempting to rebel” on the grounds that they shouted “we want water” by banging on the doors to protest that the wards were provided with water only one hour a day for 4 months; and that as a result of the disciplinary proceedings the prisoners were transferred to other prisons under coercion.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, Halil Kasal, a prisoner in İzmir Kırıklar F Type Prison No. 1, was subjected to disciplinary proceedings for telling his family the pressure and torture of the correction officers, which led to the suicide of 6 prisoners and the death of 1 prisoner on in Istanbul Silivri L Type Closed Prison No. 5, on August 6, 2022.

(08/167) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, in Iskenderun T Type Closed Prison, prisoners were not referred to hospitals, and the prescribed medication were not given to them. It is also stated in the news reports that an LGBTI+ prisoner named Ş. Y. was not referred to an R Type prison despite the medical report dated August 14, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, Bahar Karakaş Uluğ, an ill prisoner in Izmir Şakran Closed Women’s Prison was not given her medication.

(08/168) Attack on IYI Party Members in Istanbul…

It is learned that a group of 20 people attacked the IYI Party members having a campaign work in the Kıraç Osmangazi neighbourhood of the Esenyurt district of Istanbul, which injured IYI Party Esenyurt region organisation chair Uğur Ayrım and Kıraç Osmangazi neighbourhood chair Oktay Erol.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 17, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(08/170) Detained People in Mardin…

It is learned that 20 people who were detained in Artuklu, Derik, Kızıltepe and Nusaybin districts of Mardin on August 15, 2022, are released on August 17, 2022, provided that 4 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(08/171) The Case Against HDP Members in Aydın…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, the indictment of Aydın Public Prosecutor’s Office against 11 members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including Aydın provincial co-chair Aysel Baytar Önsel, who were detained in house raids on February 14, 2021; is accepted by Aydın Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on August 17, 2022. The first trial of the case on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ will be held on November 11, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, an investigation is launched against Sezgin Kesim, the editor-in-chief and Ersan Atar, the writer of the news portal https://kisadalga.net/ upon the complaint of the President’s former lawyer Mustafa İnal, over the news report titled “The ‘road blocking’ reports of the mafia and the deep silence of the state”.

(08/173) Constitutional Court’s Decision on Violation of Right to Life…

The Constitutional Court’s (AYM) decision dated May 26, 2022 regarding the application about Y. C. C. (14), who died as a result of the pepper gas used by the police in Izmir in 2017, is published in the Official Gazette on August 17, 2022. The court stated that “due to unnecessary and disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officers” the material and procedural aspects of the right to life, which is guaranteed in Article 17 of the Constitution, are violated, and a copy of the decision will be sent to the Izmir Regional Administrative Court in order to eliminate the consequences of the violation. and the family of Y. C. C. will be paid 225,000 Turkish Liras for non-pecuniary damages.

(08/174) Administrative Fine for TV and Radio Channels…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued Halk TV channel, TELE 1 TV channel and Habertürk channel with administrative fines for several programmes that aired. RTÜK also decided to remove the animation titled “Jurassic Word Cretaceous Camp” broadcast on the digital platform Netflix from the catalogue, and to remove some playlists and podcasts on the music platform Spotify on the grounds of “insulting national moral values, humiliation, slander and propaganda of the FETO terrorist organization, insulting Turkey, political party leaders and state leaders and the President of the Republic of Turkey.”

(08/175) Covid-19 Pandemic…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 17, 2022 that, 35 prisoners in Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Prison tested positive for Covid-19.
