(05/141) Threat to Human Rights Defender in Hakkari…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 17, 2022 that, the Human Rights Association (İHD) Hakkari branch co-chair Yusuf Çobanoğlu was called from an anonymous number and was said “We are going to cancel you out and others like you. We will get rid of all the members of the organization like you. They gave your name from the top, it’s almost time.”

It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2022 that, Kamuran Nemutlu, a prisoner in Istanbul Maltepe L Type Prison No 1 was kept in solitary cell. It is also reported that Kamuran Nemutlu was not given any books, magazines and newspapers.

The police intervened the press declaration for Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım, who are on hunger strike in prison; which is held at Galatasaray Square in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on May 16, 2022; and detained 2 people (Erkan Yıldırım and Nergis Doğru).

The police intervened the press declaration of the Campus Witches group, regarding the murder case of Pınar Gültekin, which was held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on May 16, 2022. It is learned that nobody was detained, and the press declaration was held despite of the intervention.

(05/145) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 16, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/146) Detained Right Defender in Istanbul…

The police detained 1 person (Hanife Yıldız) on the grounds of ‘insulting a public official’ in her speech at the press declaration of the Saturday Mothers, IHD and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on May 17, 2022, as a part of the Week of Disappearances. Hanife Yıldız is released after statement procedures.

(05/147) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency editor Sedat Yılmaz and Yeni Yaşam newspaper, upon Selçuk Bayraktar’s complaint for the news report about armed aerial vehicles and demand for 150,000 Turkish liras compensation, is held at Bakırköy Civil Court of First Instance No 14 on May 16, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to June 27, 2022.

(05/148) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against police officer K. B., for the killing of Recep Hantaş, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 on March 31, 2022. Recep Hantaş was killed by police fire while he was collecting waste paper in Diyarbakır on April 14, 2019.

The indictment demands 18 to 25 years of sentence on the charge of ‘murder with probable intent’ for the police officer.

The court rejected to arrest the police officer and adjourned the trial to June 21, 2022.

The trial of the case against police officer Murat A., on the grounds of hitting and breaking the back of lawyer Zeycan Balcı, during a press declaration on March 30, 2016 in front of Istanbul Court House, is held on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on May 16, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Murat A. on the charges of ‘injury’, ‘intentional injury that cause bone fracture’, ‘extensive use of force’.

The court rejected the intervention demands of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) and the Women and Children First association, as they were not directly harmed by the offence, and adjourned the trial to September 21, 2022.

(05/150) Hateful Leaflet Distributed in Eskişehir…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 13, 2022, that an unsigned leaflet calling for LGBTI+s to be “killed, stoned and burned” was distributed in some neighbourhoods in Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir. It is reported that a criminal complaint regarding the leaflet was filed to the prosecutor’s office on May 17, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2022, that a judicial and administrative investigation was launched by Ankara University Rectorate about the event held on May 12, 2022 within the scope of the traditional Cow Festival held at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences.

It is learned that the concert of Metin Kahraman and Kemal Kahraman which was to be held in Muş on May 17, 2022, was banned by Muş Governorate’s Office on May 16, 2022.

(05/153) Ban of Play in Kocaeli…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2022 that the Kurdish play “Don Kîxot” of Amed City Theatre, which was to be staged on May 28, 2022 in a municipal hall in Çayırova district of Kocaeli, was cancelled by the municipality on the grounds that the hall was allocated to another organization.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2022 that the Council of Judges and Prosecutors dismissed 15 judges and prosecutors from the profession on the grounds that they were “connected and linked with the organization”.

Judges and prosecutors dismissed from the profession: Afyonkarahisar provincial judge Yusuf Atçeken, Savur district prosecutor Mehmet Akbaş, Istanbul Anadolu provincial judge Esengül Taşkın Atahan, Bitlis provincial judge Halime Mehtap Gündüz, Istanbul Tax Court member Süleyman Enes Budak, Küçükçekmece district prosecutor Melih Mustafa Şahin, Şanlıurfa provincial prosecutor Ahmet Burhaneddin Atahan, Ayvalık district judge Özlem Albayrak, Hatay provincial judge Hüseyin Çomruk, Nurdağı district prosecutor Çimen Karadağ, Vezirköprü district prosecutor Hasan Köse, Milas district prosecutor Cihat Kurt, Siirt provincial judge Burak Kılınçer, Eskişehir provincial prosecutor Faruk Karahan, Kahramanmaraş provincial judge İsmail Çelik.

(05/155) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 4 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,154 as of May 16, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,904 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,055,576 as of May 16, 2022.
